The Hostelz.com Review
Cairns City Backpackers may just be the best hostel you'll ever stay at. The owners of the property were travelers themselves, and it is completely obvious that they really care. In addition to just running the operation, they are a licensed tour booker too, and will go out of their way to find you something great to do, with a price guarantee. The owner even assisted us in renting a camper van for a thirty-five-day trip down the East coast of Australia, which was not an easy task.

There is free airport pickup with certain conditions. Alternatively, you can find the hostel on Draper Street, directly behind the Cairns City Shopping Centre. You can park out front of the hostel for free. It is about a ten-minute walk to the city centre, and right behind a major shopping centre complete with a movie theatre. Walk inside the front door and you'll see the main reception and tour desk.

The hostel is split into two buildings, with a small annex at the back. Guest rooms are divided amongst the three buildings. You'll find either dorm-style or private rooms. Some rooms have private showers inside them. There are lots of toilets and showers around, so queuing is minimal, and you'll find space to put your belongings while showering. Cleaning is frequent and thorough, and all bathrooms are well stocked. Beds are comfortable, and linens are included. Towels are included in the private rooms. You can hire air conditioning for a per-day fee -- each room is equipped with AC. There are no lockers in the rooms, but there is a central bank of lockers near reception that can be hired for twelve- or twenty-four-hour intervals. They are big enough to fit a backpack.

There are numerous common areas. Internet lounge and a book exchange are in the building next to reception. In the same building, you'll find two well stocked kitchens, a nice big dining area, and a large outdoor space with couches, a pool table, and a TV is right out back. Just behind a small gate there is a swimming pool with hammocks.

In addition to hanging out at the hostel, Cairns City Backpackers have worked out a deal with a local pub. Just for buying a bed at their hostel, you'll get a voucher good for a free small meal at the bar, with the option to upgrade to any main meal for half the menu price. There is a free shuttle there twice each evening. The pub plays host to several different hostels in town, so there are plenty of people to meet, and the bar goes off each and every night with one of the best parties in town.

You would be hard-pressed to find a better place to stay than Cairns City Backpackers. The level of service from the owners and staff is something you'd expect to find at an expensive hotel, not a backpacker's hostel. The facilities are second to none, and the value is excellent. Don't waste your time staying anywhere else while in Cairns.

Great base from which to explore Cairns!
Really liked this hostel. Very well set up with staff that are very friendly and willing to help. Very well lit and generally very clean. Plentiful bathrooms and toilets, all kept clean. Great facilities -- three computers from which you can access the internet -- just buy vouchers from reception -- fast connections. TV and DVDs that you can rent for free. Dorms generally quite spacious and light with good ventilation. Staff very helpful in booking trips -- very knowledgeable but not pushy and trips ran very smoothly. Also good for booking Greyhound tickets and giving advice on that. Free dinner at Woolshed every night -- can't be bad! Only one negative, the hostel is a five- to ten-minute walk from the city centre and did feel a bit unsafe walking back from the centre in the dark. However, seemed safe enough and once you get to know a few people you can generally find someone to walk back with. So, all in all, would recommend this hostel and would definitely come back and stay again!

The Hostel is very good. At the reception the people are very friendly and do everything to help with local information and with the booking of the trips! The rooms are nice and very clean! The common area is also very good with the options given. I liked it!

I loved this hostel! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and nice. This is one of my favorite hostels that I stayed in while I was in Australia for four months. Go visit it and see how great it is for yourself! This isn't like one of the big hostels where you are just a number. The staff there really are so nice!

Cairns city backpackers is awesome! The staff are really friendly and will go out of their way to help you plan your trip. The hostel is really clean and the rooms are spacious. It's not too far to walk to town and the supermarket is really close. It's very convenient! This place is ideal.

Great value for money! The staff were brilliant (offered advice and support on Andy's newly found tropical disease -- very comforting). Great recommendations on day trips. Free evening meals and airport transfers are included too! Highly recommended for a good stay and a brilliant time!

looks amazing from the outside, bit shabby on the inside. the photos are a bit misleading, the pool is tiny, and there are not hundreds of palm trees, more like five. we were in a double room which was pretty rank due to the fact that the curtain was completely mouldy, the sheets looked dirty, and there was a dirty scrap of towel randomly in there. on the bright side we did have our own shower and air con. go there because the owner is the most helpful man you will ever meet and knows everything about Cairns and all the best deals on tours. i think probably all the other rooms were fine and overall it was a really good place to stay.

It's a great place -- quiet, chilled out, and not at all impersonal or faceless. The rooms are clean, they put on a dvd at night, and the patio at the back has hammocks, and an open bbq. Also there's lots of books around for reading purposes. Above all it's cheap!

We stayed there in December of 2005. The hostel has new owners now. The one we interacted with a bit was Dave. We found them both to be quite nice and friendly. The only thing was it was a bit unclean, more than what's typical for a hostel. This hostel isn't in the middle of everything like some others, but it is a short walk to the city center and the hostel offers a nighly shuttle. Also you get a free meal at the Woolshed, or can pay 5 dollars at the pub for an ungrade. A lot of the hostels offer this. Anyway, it's surprisingly good, especially the upgrades.

For four months in 2004 it was my home away from home. I wish I was there now! THE best place to stay in Cairns.

This hostel is very quiet, very nice and has helpful people. It is family run, and the kitchen was clean and spacious. They have an outdoor BBQ, nice bunks and a very relaxing lobby/reading area. It was very homey.
