2 Hated this place. The staff acted like you owed them something for staying at a rated hostel that everyone loves. Good points --clean (although our linen was never changed whole time we were there), excellent kitchen and facilities. Bad points -- miles away from anywhere. It's a good walk into town, which you would not want to do on your own at night (no buses go back to hostel after woolshed bus). buses run every few hours which means waiting around. staff are so busy to really care, internet and office are closed from 12 till 4 and 8 onwards, which is frustrating when you are staying in, and so far from anywhere. Also always busy, so had to wait to chat to them. Aircon in rooms is noisy and $1 per three hours. Felt so much hotter here than being on the esplanade, that it was unbearable without aircon. I have stayed in many hostels now, and this was by far the worst experience i have had. we ended up staying in a room that cost $10 more a night, had our own bathroom and was on the esplanade, and it was a millions times better. so much nicer than being stuck in the middle of nowhere.

1 Stay here if you enjoy passive smoking, being treated like you owe them a favour for letting you staying there, penny pinching, a campsite that makes accommodation in Rio's outskirts seem attractive, or walking five kilometers per night. On the plus side there were no backpackers stealing from each other -- instead that job was ably performed by others jumping over the fence and picking dorm locks with a screwdriver. I like hostels with a relaxed atmosphere to noise -- makes everyone a bit more relaxed. But Tropic Days manages to achieve something special -- a lot of noise and a wound up stick-up-bum approach to it. Admittedly this isnt helped by the indigenous australian community who live next door, but an encounter with multicultural australia maybe one of the highlights of your visit. A bit of aggro on the street as you try to get back into this wonderful hostel will save you having to do a self-guided after-dark Alice Springs tour.

4 We stayed in this hostel in May 2006. Good atmosphere, very friendly, clean hostel. Only one down side, it's slightly off the beaten track so can be a bit of a long walk back from the pub late at night. They operate a free mini bus shuttle to/from the centre till mid-evening.

4 Really friendly hostel; staff make an effort and it has a real homely feel to it. Perfect if you've just arrived in Oz and want somewhere pretty chilled. No bar though :(

5 The best hostel i have ever had the pleasure of staying at in the whole world. The atmosphere is brilliant as to are all the staff that run Tropic Days. The cleanest and best hostel going. I only wish I could spend the rest of my days there chilling in the hammock!

4 I enjoyed my stay here at Tropic Days. The hostel is very clean and spacious offering plenty of kitchens, bathrooms and communal areas. It is based out of town so you are reliant on the free buses in to town. The hostel is a great place to relax especially if like me you are doing a dive course whilst your there. The only downside I found was on my day of leaving the staff had a bit of a u-turn in their attitude, they were very friendly but suddenly seemed very keen on getting us out of our room, even before the checking out time. One member of staff stormed in to my double room to "check" we were packing up, we were left a bit stunned as we were in the middle of getting dressed and we were offered no apology. We also found the lady on reception a bit petty- she would not let us use the phone to call a local taxi firm and we had no change. Surely the place isn't that hard up that you can't make a quick call, most places we stayed at were quite relaxed in this respect. I'm sure we just caught the staff on a bad day- perhaps there was pressure from the stern Irish lady in charge to get the place sorted. Having said that the cleanliness of the place was appreciated.

5 What a wunderful start to our Ozzi-Trip! We stayed here for two nights - and that was really really nice. You feel a bit like home, everything is really familiar and nice. And the BBQ on Monday evening is really worth it, best BBQ we had in Ozzi, so try it if you get the chance! All the best for the whole team...

5 I had a great stay at Tropic Days. It's clean and safe. The staff are friendly and helpful. Don't miss the Aussie barbecue on Sunday with Gabe — it was the best barbecue we had among all the backpackers we stayed at (and by the way you learn to play a Didge). My advice: Go to Tropic Days and have a good time.

5 What a truly fantastic hostel! I've stayed in plenty of hostels over the past two and a half years and this one is in the top three. It's homely, friendly, clean, and the staff are very helpful, fun and welcoming. The tropical garden setting with hammocks, pool, lush green vegetation and "chill-out" areas all help to make this place somewhere you can really relax. Barbecue and pizza nights are great entertainment with various competitions, dancing and banter! All in all, this truly is "Cairns' best kept secret!" Cheers, Gabe and Cathy for such a special place!

5 I loved this hostel. After a long trip up the East Coast, staying in some really dodgy accommodation, I thought it was wonderful to arrive in a hostel that made me feel at home. It's really clean, friendly and welcoming. The fact that the reception closes in the afternoon didn't worry me at all. You can chill out on the hammocks till it opens again! No worries! It's a small, family run hostel where the staff will go out of their way to help you. It's not a huge impersonal hostel where the staff won't ever remember your name, and that does it for me every time! Tropic Days is fantastic!

5 This place is just amazing, so clean and the staff are so friendly. They have everything you need here and it is very well looked after, which is really good to see. The barbecue night with crocodile and kangaroo is so much fun, you should not miss it. The rooms are fresh, bright and we just loved the towels and wooden blinds, very up market. This place is not to be missed, a short walk from town away from the noise for those who want a good night's sleep and a lovely stay. Go on make the effort. A big 10 out of 10 for me.

5 Unbelievable place. Just so clean, safe and helpful. It is so homely even with towels on the beds! There is everything you would need. It is more like a guesthouse or even your friend's house. This place is not to be missed if anyone goes to Cairns. It's a 20-minute walk to town or you can take the free buses that go from 7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Bonus!! The walk is worth it to find a place like this. The staff can help with any tours and if you book a few you can get discount or even a free T-shirt. The Monday night croc and kangaroo barbecue are well worth staying for. Even the pizza nights are great, too, with a chance to win a free trip. The garden is just outstanding and well looked after , which is lovely to see. Go for it, this place is amazing!

4 We really liked Tropic Days. We camped here for about 10 days. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and the quiz and pizza night on a Thursday is great fun. The kitchen is clean and large. It is a small hostel, which gives it a better atmosphere. The camping area is very small, as is the pool, but we didn't mind. A little bit out of the city center, but they have a bus that takes you and the walk is always good exercise! I would recommend you stay here if you like friendly hostels. If you just want somewhere central for a few nights, then I would stay somewhere more central.
