Hostelz.com's Review
The recently opened Chilli Hostel is a clean, modern, and relaxing place to stay close to the main railway station in Bangkok.

The Location

The hostel is located just off Charoen Krung Road, around eight hundred meters south of Hualamphong railway station. Bangkok is a large place, so no one location is ideal for reaching the whole city. Chilli is a reasonable compromise, as it's quite close to Chinatown and also the shopping areas at Siam Square and Silom in the new part of the city. Other hostels are closer to specific sights, though, and if you’re keen to be close to the backpacker scene on the Khao San Road, look elsewhere -- it’s on the other side of the city.

Public transport is close at hand -- the metro and rail stations at Hualamphong are around five minutes away on foot. Closer is the Si Phraya pier, where you can catch the Chao Phraya Express river boats to access popular sights such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and the Khao San Road. It’s worth noting that these boats stop running at around 7 p.m. The nearest Skytrain station at Saphan Taksin is about a mile away.

There’s not much in the way of food or entertainment close to the hostel, although there are a couple of cafes close by and plentiful street food stalls near the Si Phraya pier.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are small but bright, stylish, and spotlessly clean, with large windows. "Dorm" rooms are equipped with just a single bunk bed -- they are for only two people. Each room has its own quiet and effective air-conditioning unit. The bathrooms are as clean and modern as the bedrooms, with good hot showers and Western-style toilets. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, which is a real bonus -- no queues for the shower! Towels and bedding are provided, but shower gel and shampoo are not.

Common Spaces

The ground floor of the hostel contains the reception, bar, and lounge area. Comfortable chairs and sofas are provided, as well as tables and benches, which are more useful for eating or using a computer. There’s a large TV and two computers with free internet access and webcams. Free Wi-Fi is available in the common areas (a weak signal is available upstairs too). A coin-operated washing machine and tumble dryer are available for guest use. A small selection of books is available to borrow.

The interior of the hostel is nonsmoking, but smoking is permitted in the covered outdoor space at the rear of the building, and there are some tables and chairs at the front as well. The bar sells a range of reasonably priced alcoholic and soft drinks from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Free coffee is provided in the morning. Snacks or breakfast are not available.

The hostel is quiet and friendly but certainly not a place to find a party, and probably not great for meeting other travelers -- there were usually only ever a couple of other guests in the common areas.

Summary

While the hostel is not a lively place, and there’s not a lot happening close by, we really like Chilli. As a relaxing refuge from the bustle of the city, it’s excellent -- the standard of the rooms and common areas is high, it’s good value, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
