The Hostelz.com Review
Located twenty kilometers outside the city center, Moreton Bay Lodge is isolated from all the craziness of the city – in a good way. Because of the great weekly rates, many people show up here for a couple of days and end up staying a couple of weeks or months. Because of this, and the hostel's small size (only six rooms), when a new traveler arrives, everyone immediately notices and takes interest.

The location is right on Moreton Bay, across the street from the supermarket and Manly Pub. Free sailing trips of Wednesdays are a five-minute walk from the hostel, and a short twenty-minute walk on the path along the coast gets you into the larger neighbor suburb of Wynnum. Free shuttles go into the city about three times a day, but the train station is only a six- or seven-minute walk up the hill.

The rooms are very open and spacious, the kitchen is large and clean, events are always put on by the staff, and the atmosphere is like a large family that likes to party. All in all, it's a cheap, spacious, fun, and inviting place to stay for however long you might get stuck there.

It's not a good accommodation like you think from internet
Ok the accommodation has everything that you need -- not many people, decorated rooms very nice, backpackers very friendly when we were here, kitchen basic, but the crew is not so great at the reception (I think that it's more important the business of their pub). the price is $15 if you book online or $20 if not. Then, there is the problem of the transport. It is far away from the city but in the place where it is, there is only a supermarket, the port and nothing other, nothing. And there is the backpackers-bus that make only one run in the morning to the city, and you have to return with forty minutes of train. So if you pay the train every day it's not so cheap like you think. There is something better in the city.

Don't get conned!
This backpackers did not have internet access when I stayed there about a year ago. It's on a bay which is really more a suburban area, way outside of Brisbane with transport to the main attractions of Brisbane or the Gold Coast difficult. The strategy of the guy who was running it (and possibly still is) was to bait backpackers by offering free transport from the airport to rope them in and then offering highly priced excursions onto the bay and not much else! When I was there all of the people staying there seemed miserable and annoyed. This person did not appear to have any legitimate interest in backpackers or their needs or enjoyment. Stay away!

Oh gross!
We only stayed in this hostel two nights, but that was enough! Another traveler told us about this place on our way into Brisbane so we decided to give it a shot, what a mistake! The place is cramped and gross and the kitchen has dried stuff in the sink and smells mouldy. We stayed the first night because we were too tired to get back on the train, and stayed the second because the manager charged us an extra night anyway! Try the hotel across the street if you have to -- anything's better than this.

The worst hostel of all time!
Oh my god, do not stay here! This place is a hovel, bedbugs are in every nook and cranny -- they are as big as cockroaches and crawl all over you day or night. The rooms are dirty, the showers even more disgusting, and worst of all the owner -- he is rude, arrogant, unsympathetic, and unconcerned -- don't complain to him as the most you'll get is a shoulder shrug. This place should be shut down -- it's a health hazard!

Good potential -- poor delivery
Very dirty. Under staffed. Crowded. Disorganised. Good location close to the sea and restaurants, bars. Cheap. Problems right from the start and things did not improve. Blocked toilets, people using showers to piss in, everyone getting sick -- poor. The free sailing is through the local boat club (WAGS) which has nothing to do with this hostel.

This place is a mess. We had nothing but problems after arriving here. After making reservations in November for a stay in January, we were told upon arrival that our $10/night would actually be $25. This was never mentioned during our previous e-mail contacts with the hostel, and despite having a print-out of the online booking receipt (and price quote), they would not honor the Hostelz.com price. Apparently there was a policy change sometime after we booked, and we were never notified of this. Also, they do not honor the VIP Backpackers card, despite being advertised in the VIP Backpackers book, as well as on the Hostelz.com website as being VIP certified. Despite registering a six-bed, mixed dorm, we were put in an eight-bed girls dorm, even though one of our party members was a guy. Needless to say, this was very uncomfortable for us and the girls in the room. We were told we'd be moved after the first night, but after a week-long stay, realized that this wasn't going to happen. They tried to talk us into paying for an extra night that we weren't at the hostel. A night prior to our arrival for reasons that we still don't understand. The free sailing trips rarely, if ever, happen. The hostel does not own boats, four-wheelers, or sailing equipment, they borrow it from local sailing clubs. Of the six advertised outings on the board, only one happened. The staff does not know the area. We asked for directions and suggestions, but were only provided with vague descriptions, most of which were incorrect. The advertised shuttle that goes into the city five times a day does not exist. There's a van that picked us up from the airport, but if you ask to be taken anywhere, they'll point you in the (general) direction of the train. Any requests made to the staff are met with grief. There are two refrigerators in the kitchen, one which is full of food (it doesn't matter if it's yours, labeled or not, it'll be eaten by someone -- probably a regular), and another which hasn't worked in awhile, but is packed with long-spoiled milk and other perishable foods. Besides the refrigerators, the kitchen (and almost everywhere else in the hostel) is filthy. People rarely pick up after themselves, the counters and sinks are gross, and food is left out overnight. Also, please note that the Moreton Bay Backpacker's page on Hostelz.com has been changed since our stay there. I'd checked the website before leaving for this trip, and there was no mention of a three-day rule for the $10/night rooms. There was also talk of a sandy beach, which doesn't exist. They advertise free lockers, which are actually $10, and several free tours, which range in price from $15 per person up to $70. I don't know where the free drink upon arrival was, but it certainly wasn't here. The place was most certainly a bar first, hostel second. Needless to say, this was very, very disappointing and we will not be coming back.

This hostel is in a lovely part of the world. The free sailing on Wednesdays offered by the hostel was excellent. The pub across the road was good, if a little noisy at night. The owner's daughter was probably the most gorgeous woman in Australia. It's well worth a visit.
