Stationed on the main street of Cardwell, the Cardwell Beach House offers backpackers a quiet stay while they work at the local prawn processor, or in the fields doing fruit picking. This small town is a bit off the beaten track for most travellers, with the exception of those serious about finding good work. The main grocery store is a 3 minute walk away and a backpacker bar is just across the road. Apart from these attractions, the town really does not have much to offer. The hostel has a restaurant and bar, but these are geared more toward the locals and site guests rather than the backpackers staying in dorms.
The building itself is located along a narrow strip of beach and is classified as a motel that has been converted into a hostel. (Cardwell is in 'croc country' so it is advisable to take caution when near the water.) The property is quite large and is spotted with coconut palms, and mango trees. When in season, the backpackers can enjoy the fresh mangos and coconuts at no additional charge. Camper van and tent sites are available, and the facility comes equipped with a swimming pool, common-use kitchen and TV room. The rooms are ensuite and are very clean, with small refridgeration units for food storage. There is plenty closet and counter space in each room which helps the backpacker rid themselves of that living-out-of-a-bag feeling.
The pleasant owners operate this small hostel and take care to give you an at-home feel. Because the hostel is so small, all of the guests become well acquainted with one another. In fact, many of them also work together, which truly gives the hostel a big happy family atmosphere. One differentiating feature is the free unlimited dial-up Internet that gives travellers a great way to keep in touch with those back home. A great place to stay for someone looking to have a couple relaxing days in small-town North Queensland.
