Hostelz.com's Review
Casa Bellavista Hostel is a basic hostel with a small number of beds that makes for good interaction between travelers.

The Location

The location of the hostel is at the same time its main advantage and also its main drawback. The hostel is located at the top of a short passageway that is the spiritual home of La Candelaria district of Bogota. It could not be more central, with bars and restaurants a stone's throw away and all the major museums and landmarks no more than ten minutes by foot. The hostel is on the corner of a small square that becomes very lively in the evenings, especially at weekends, where locals congregate to listen to live music. During the day and the early evening this location is perfect, but returning from a nightclub in the early hours this is a very sketchy, quiet, and poorly lit part of La Candelaria where robberies are common. With no security guard on the door, you have to ring the bell and wait in the dark passageway for over a minute until someone gets out of bed to let you in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two dorms upstairs -- one with seven beds and the other with ten. Mattresses are decent and covers are given to protect you from those cold Bogota nights. One negative point is that the covers are not very thick, meaning that it can still get chilly from time to time. The ten-bed dorm is en suite, with all other guests sharing another shower that is an old bath and is well past its best. There is a separate toilet on this floor with another downstairs in the reception area. The rooms are cleaned daily and the cleaning lady is a real star. The beds are made on a daily basis and she is forever tidying up with a smile on her face. During breakfast she will bring down fresh coffee and top up your drink at the table. She cannot do enough for you.

Common Spaces

The free breakfast (croissants and tea or coffee) is served in the basement area that has a TV. There is a table in the reception area that will fit four people, and another open plan area outside of the dorm rooms with a glass ceiling. The whole building, although relatively small, has character, with wooden walls and floors and coloured glass throughout. The staff are friendly and helpful and most speak perfect English. At times it is difficult to know who works there and who is a guest as everyone is interacting together, and staff often go out for drinks with the guests.

The lockers are sturdy and big enough for a daypack. Kitchen facilities are basic but more than adequate.

Summary

If they put a security guard on the door at night, the hostel would be great. If you don't plan on returning after midnight, then this is a decent option; otherwise be prepared to look nervously over your shoulder as you wait for the door to be opened.

5   Homey hostel This hostel was very cute and homey, with warm beds and showers and free hot breakfast. The family that runs this was the nicest. Always eager to help, teach you Spanish and just make sure your stay was comfortable. Geraldo is probably the nicest person I've ever met. It has been a lovely experience.  , USA ()
