La Oveja Negra Hostel

Description's Review

La Oveja Negra Hostel -- or The Black Sheep -- stands out for its ample spaces, extremely helpful staff who will try to help out even with the strangest requests (and probably will), and its lively atmosphere. On the negative side, it is a bit on the expensive side (although average for Tamarindo).

The Location

The village of Tamarindo is located by the beach and is small enough to easily explore on foot. This hostel is situated next to the main crossroads of the village, which is also the main bus stop when getting into the village. Close by you can find various other hostels (usually with things going on at night); a supermarket; and various bars, restaurants, and shops. The beach is a fifteen-minute walk, and the nearby beaches can also be reached on foot, or by bus. The area is lively at night and so is the hostel itself, especially toward the end, so an early night's sleep is not always an option. If that's what you are after, perhaps it is worth checking other parts of the village.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Both private rooms and dormitories are really simple and basic, in contrast to the rest of the hostel, which is nicely decorated and provides great facilities. Dorm rooms typically consist of anywhere between six and ten beds (some bunks, others not). Some lockers are available. Strong repellent is advisable anywhere in Tamarindo, and the same goes for this hostel.

There are sufficient bathrooms, and in general terms they are quite clean, and the same goes for the rooms. They can be a bit messy, however, when the hostel is full, given that most come back from the beach around the same time.

Common Spaces

Plenty of common spaces are available -- both busier and quieter ones, depending on what you are after. When entering, you come across the bar area (try the affordable smoothies!), where there is also a pool table and a foosball one. On its right there is an area with benches and tables, while behind the building there is another huge area with plants, hammocks, and tables. When entering the main building there is the reception area and a large living room space with comfortable sofas and a TV. The common kitchen is also big and well equipped. Meeting fellow travelers is really easy due to the setup and the fact that activities such as live music events are often organized.

Surfboard rentals, surfing lessons, bike rentals, and tours are also available -- just ask the friendly staff. This hostel is definitely a good option if meeting others and partying at times is what you are looking for.

I stayed at La Oveja Negra for a week (right before semana santa). I had a blast and will go back when I visit tamarindo again. Staffs are very helpful and you can rent a board, take lessons and go surfing trips(prices are pretty affordable and it's worth it). I loved the fact that it's not located in crowded main street but one block up which means it's still close to everything; it's just more relaxing and nicer. Dorms are clean and a/c works well!!!! lockers in the room were very useful. There is pool table in a lounge and table tennis outside. I would highly recommend!

I stayed at La Oveja for one week and had a fantastic time. The owners were really helpful in offering suggestions on what to do and where to go. I was able to book surf lessons right at the reception desk as well as organize a snorkle tour, both are offered by the owners at a great price. The atmosphere was laid back but fun with travelers from all over the world -- most of them were surfers but some were here due to the hostel's close proximity to restaurants, bars and the beach. The dorms were clean and lockers are offered in each room to lock up your valuables. However, I did not feel the need to lock up my things as the hostel is really safe and secure. La Oveja Negra offers pretty much everything you need to ensure you have a relaxing stay. Everyone should stay here!
