The Hostelz.com Review
Ozzie Pozzie Backpackers is a friendly and cheerful hostel in Port Macquarie, Australia. Whilst being a quite rundown building, the staff maintain an upbeat atmosphere and some added extras make it a decent place to rest your head if you can't get into the other hostels in town.
The Location
Based on a residential side street, there is onsite parking available for a limited number of cars. It's also close enough to the town that you can walk to the centre in about twenty minutes. To get to most of the beaches you'll need to catch a bus from the main road.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms and bathrooms are a bit of a disappointment, but they are however pretty clean, which is a plus. Sheets are provided (you make up the bed yourself), and as the rooms are only six person, you can get a good night's sleep. The bathrooms are old and very basic -- shower and toilet doors are very short, and there are only two of each per sex. The feeling is very much "public bathroom.” The doors are often left open at night with the light on, so bugs are normally present after dark.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is spacious, with plenty of fridge space. However there is only four gas burners and one sink, so be prepared to wait. There's a decent number of tables in the kitchen itself to eat on. There's also a nice little outdoor courtyard with a number of benches and tables, as well as a hammock, for chilling out. The kitchen has two computers with free Wi-Fi, which is an excellent feature.
Around the corner from the kitchen there is a lounge area with two sofas, a TV with VHS player (and an old selection of VHS to choose from), and a fairly decent book exchange. The hostel's vibe is extremely laid back and low key. Staff intermingle with guests, and the communal areas are always buzzy. You're likely to make several friends during your stay here.
Summary
Ozzie Pozzie Hostel is a quirky place which is a bit rough around the edges, but ok for a night's sleep.

Basic backpackers Everything you need for a few days stay in Port Macquarie -- this is independently run and so facilities are more basic than chain hostels but clean and well kept. There is a free games room which is open till 11pm as well as a tv room and plenty of common spaces including a kitchen. You can arrange a free pick up from the bus stop and for just $10 you can store bags (although the area isn't locked) and use the facilities until your bus the day you check out which is really good. — Anonymous , England (2011-09-21)

100% Ozzie Pozzie is the greatest! I came back 4 times during my tour of Australia as it felt like my 'home away from home'. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming; the facilities super clean; property well maintained; pool gorgeous on a hot sunny day (no chlorine -- bonus!); beautiful aviary and birds; all in all, very relaxed. I highly recommend Oz Poz to anyone travelling -- Port Macquarie is a sweet place with lots of options. Thanks to Richard, Phil, Brad, Laurie, Simon, and all the crew for a wonderful time. — Deb Maike , Canadian (2011-05-13)

Great place a must visit!! Fantastic hostel!, very clean and very friendly people and staff. Lots of things to do! Pool, games room, separate tv room with cable and lots of movies, bike rental, nice court yards, big kitchen with enough fridge space, free internet on 4 stations. By rights the best hostel on the east coast and a must visit!!!!!! — peter , holland (2010-04-29)

Cosy, relaxed, helpful If I didn't have a time restraint I probably would've stayed longer. Ozzie Pozzie not only set me up with a kayak tour, but were really helpful if getting it all changed around for me when I got sick. The staff are the most friendly, welcoming people you could ask for and they made me feel right at home. The colourful decor gives the place a funky, islandy feel that's hard to find in hostels. Small and intimate, Ozzie Pozzie was a great find and made my time in Port just awesome (even though I was sick). — Kelsey , Canada (2009-07-11)

Friendly, great! The hostel is just great. The owner is very friendly and there is lots to do in this little place. If I'm correct eight beaches, which are amazing! Go surfing with the dolphins on the lighthouse beach. The hostel has a pool and a backyard where everybody sits and talks about their travels. You can get bodyboards, surfboards, and mountain bikes. I had a very good time there with Christmas (free BBQ for everyone)! Don't make the mistake to stay there only for one night. — Meike Wilbrink , The Netherlands (2009-03-09)

Perfect chilled place to hang around I thought I'd let people know that it's changed hands. I stayed in June 2008 and it has recently been taken over by a fellow that has himself done a lot of traveling so he know what backpackers want. He spent lots of time with the guests answering questions, giving advice, cooking BBQs, and just making sure everyone was having a good time. I was cycling throughout the area and was only going to say a night and ended up staying for two because the place was so nice and clean and full of good people. Highly recommend it. — amy , Australia (2008-07-03)

Nice hostel, good facilities, small dorms (i stayed in a three-bed dorm). A little bit of a walk from the main street, but i was very impressed that the shuttle bus came and picked us up when we arrived in town even though it was well after 10 p.m. Free muesli, tea, and coffee. Free bikes are not really free ($7 "maintenance fee") and not the best quality, but still handy. Music and the hammocks give the courtyard a cool feel to it. — belinda (2007-02-05)
We stayed two nights in Ozzie Pozzie in december. The hostel looks nice, the guy who picked us up was really nice, but the owner is a pain in the ***. There is no such thing as free bikes, while the put out adverts which tell you they have free bikes. the bikes can't be ridden when it had rained. We couldn't leave our luggage at the hostel while we were waiting for the bus and went to the bar with all our gear. Funny thing that the owner of the bar could tell us we were from Ozzie Pozzie, because they s*ck (he said.). — John and Lena (2006-12-14)

This was the best hostel I have stayed in! The owners were the friendliest couple you could ask to meet and the new night manager was a great guy! I'm sure to be back! If you don't stay in Ozzie Pozzie you are missing out on the best hostel you can think of!!! Go here!!! — Jo (2005-01-22)

The facilities were good. Bit of a bummer the owner was such a toss as it really dampened my stay in Port Macquarie, but I'll be back (Port is an awesome city with heaps to do). — Jasper (2004-02-12)

Great hostel. The only thing stopping it from being excellent was the caretaker/handyman who seemed to let the power (!) he had go to his head. Apart from this, great place to meet people. Made a handful of friends for life here! — Stuart (2003-09-15)
