1  Barely survivable, would have killed myself if i had no friends there. If you are looking for work (and if you're not, what the hell are you doing in griffith?), the international sounds like a hopeful prospect. A friend and I ran out of money, called harvest trail and they put us in touch with the hostel who promised us tomato picking work at 7 dollars a bucket, saying that 4 to 5 buckets an hour were easily doable. I guess they would be, if they weren't cherry tomatoes. And if the rows were good, rather than the parched, half-dead excuses for plants we found when we got there. As it was, it felt like a triumph to fill a bucket an hour, let alone 4 or 5! And if that wasn't enough, I stopped working on the tomatoes 3 weeks ago, and STILL HAVEN'T BEEN PAID, a lot of people have been forced to borrow money off reception. Oh, incidentally, it turns out that the owner of the hostel (Frank) also owns the tomato farm! Hmmmm. When we politely asked the unjust, sadistic, greasy, egocentric, rude and unhelpful bitches at reception if there was any other work available (several times), we were turned down with a "you'll have to start paying some rent if you want better work". Is it just me, or does that sound a bit chicken-or-the-egg-like (a pointless circle)? The hostel itself is a bit of a dump, dirty kitchen and dining room, stained sheets, broken glass in the garden and the so-called games room. But it is the sort of place where everyone is in the same boat, and so despite its shittier aspects, the international makes for a good group and a "making-the-most-of-it" atmosphere, although that has to be attributed to the people staying there. All in all, if you can avoid it (and you can, try the place just down the road, or up the hill, or just stay in one of the hotels and sign up with an agency), then do!  , England ()
1  Dirty place and poor management I stayed in this hostel 30minutes and leave. F***ing sh*thole and very dirty. I stayed 2 months in Griffith and it was the bigger mistake I made during my stay in Australia.  , Belgium ()
1  Revolting! Stay away at all costs -- big scam We traveled to Griffith under the assumption that we had farm work all arranged for us and accommodation sorted. We had been in contact (via the harvest trail website) with an organisation called Harvest Hotline who recommended and supposedly organised this "job." They gave us a number to call to confirm the "work" and it turned out to be the guy who owns this hostel although we didnt know this till after we arrived. On the phone he implied that he had lots of work available and made it seem that he was in fact the guy we were to work for. When we arrived we found ourselves waiting hours for one of the two staff members to book us in and were then told that we had to register at a farm employment agency called Summit Personnel before booking in. We also had to wait another ten hours to book in cause thats when the office would be open again. We later found out that the con artist who owned the hostel also owns Summit personnel. There was no work waiting for us and we spent several nail biting days living on toast and wondering if we would ever get out of Griffith. The place was filthy, creepy, and absolutely crawling with roaches and bedbugs. As soon as we got work we escaped from the hell trap that is this hostel and moved into our own unit. Summit Personnel refused to give us more work as we no longer lived in the hostel. Thankfully we registered at Skilled personnel and was helped hugely by the manager Brad who got us work at a winery and was the reason we survived Griffith. I do not recommend this place but I strongly recommend that if you are stuck here like we were then go talk to Brad and Tanya at Skilled. Tell everyone who might be heading that way.  ()
5  Everything over there is sh*t but I had a very good time!  ()
4  Griffith International Hostel is a place in which Backpackers can find work all year round but if for the slitest reason when you arrive there is no work Ceaser will try his hardest to find you some. Because fo the Nature of the work in Griffith ie. working in a nursery, Orange packing, and assorted other seasonal work the residents seem to form an extended family everyone well mostly everyone is more than welcome to offer you a drink and if you arrive on the weekend you are in for a special treat most of the backpackers are up late and are ready to party so if you are up for it come and join in they won't bite ! My time in Griffith was great I met tones of peopel and even picked up a bit of other languages. As a rule of thumb there are not many double rooms for couples and offten rooms are arranged based on the amount of people staying there. So Australian couples are generally put in the caravan park. Work is generally reserved for backpackers as it is harder for them to find work as offten they are only staying for short time periods. There have been quite a few Aussies that have stayed there but generally they either cause problems such as drugs, excessive drinking, or other assorted problems. My reccomendation to aussies is to try prioneer park as they have private rooms and the sence is way smaller. This is quite a busy hostel all year and room and work is generally resverved for backpackers. As for rides to and from work they try thier best to get you there on time but with 40 odd people all going to about different 20 jobs all over the place and generally all at the same time it is hard and offten you are 10-15 late. The employers do understand and they do only have two vehicles for transport. I didn't have a problem with bed bugs and generally enjoyed my time there. One more Comment there is Mangaement there but not at all times you must have gone at a time that they were not there. they are not the only Hostel in town but the other one doesn't provide as much as this one and is in a far better location. I found the below persons comments about the calaber of people staying there extreamly offencive as they do the best they can given the disrepair of the hostel. The room you speak of with beds on the floor does not exsit and I am not sure what you are talking about. This is one of the greatest places I have ever been it is a bit of a dump but the atmostphere there was amazing!  ()
1  Even after 10 minutes having strolled around to have a look at this pig's place I saw no sign of management, if there is any. I had no plans to stay in this disgusting place that seemed to be crammed with the kind of people who give backpackers a bad reputation. One room had mattresses on the floor with about 20 cm space between them. They think they can get away with arrogance because they are the only hostel in town and you have no choice but to stay with them. Well, the fact that carrying a tent at all times when travelling comes in handy was proven again while I walk to the other side of town to the lovely caravan park. Quiet, safe, clean and a nice small swimming pool. Orchards for work across the street. What else do you want? The receptionist told me that so many backpackers had complained about the filthy pig's place they call the hostel. I have traveled to over 65 countries and stayed in MANY hostels. This one in Griffith is one of the most disgusting ones I have ever seen. They also did not bother to reply to two inquiries I made about work availability. So much for HELPING people with finding work, ay? Do not even think about staying there!  ()
5  Caesar is almost bizarre as Kiwi Jim. I remember Caesar getting me to play my guitar at a local event — the man is persuasive. Sh*t town, sh*t-looking hostel, but damn, some good memories!  ()
1  G'day Aussie backpackers: They do arrange work for you but if you're an Australian citizen you're not allowed to stay in the hostel. They dump you in a skanky caravan with beds in it that are about one meter by 50 centimeters. I like to know people are doing farm work and not sleeping there. There were also no facilities to cook in the caravan and the organization of the whole hostel and caravan park is the worst I have ever seen in me whole life. It is probably better if you are allowed to sleep in the hostel. What I heard from more people about the hostel is that is dirty and filled with bedbugs and all kind of crap. Because we didn't slept there for three nights we both got a serious migraine attack and became seriously ill. Unless your completely skinned [drunk] don't go there and don't go there if you have an Australian passport. — Me and me missus  ()
