Nova Traveller's Lodge

Description's Review

Nova Travellers Lodge is affiliated with the Chinese YHA and as with all such hostels you either need to be a member of a YHA of any country, join on the spot, or pay for temporary membership in the form of a higher price for your bed or room. It's a professionally run, high quality hostel. Check-in is twenty-four hours and there are no curfews or lockouts but the common area is closed when things quiet down. Smoking is not permitted in the common area.

The Location

The hostel is located in a mostly modern mixed commercial area not too far from the Wen Shu Temple and its associated renovated historic old streets. It's tucked away in a courtyard of conventional apartment blocks. It's not far from the North Rail station and accessible from the main bus stations. There are small supermarkets all around and a large one ten minutes away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The often-mixed-gender dorms -- for four to six people -- are air conditioned and though they are just a bit smaller than average, are good quality. The beds are solid with firm but comfortable mattresses and each has its own light and power socket. There are large lockable lockers and extra secure ones at reception. Each guest has an electronic key. The high quality bathroom facilities are common to a few rooms, and shared across gender.

Common Spaces

The indoor common area is modern and attractive with many soft sofas and tables. The reception is integrated into it, enabling the staff to readily interact with guests. There's a TV/DVD player with projection in the basement, which is undergoing further development at the time of this review. Wi-Fi is good throughout the hostel and there are two fee payable internet PCs. There's a small bar and restaurant service with a small selection of local and western food. Notices say that guests should not consume food and drink in the common area that they have bought outside.

There's no members' kitchen but each room has an electric kettle. Music is always played in the common area, most typically easy listening jazz. An outdoor area has tables and chairs where smoking is permitted, and a table tennis table. There are sinks for hand washing clothes and a good covered outdoor drying area as well as a fee-payable washing machine.

The hostel is modern, clean, attractive, and a pleasure to stay in. The atmosphere is relaxed and easygoing, but has a more upmarket feeling than most hostels. There are no major issues, though properly chilled, cheaper drinks should be available. A members' kitchen is also missing.

Good dorms, very clean, friendly and helpful staff, and good bus transportation is nearby. I was especially grateful to be picked up at the new train station by Reiki. Outstanding!
