I had a terrible experience here this summer. It is a short drive from town, firstly, which makes it inconvenient as it's in a rural area not served by bus. I was able to get a ride with some folks I met at a cafe, luckily. when I got there, they remarked that it looked like a concentration camp and that they were afraid to leave me there. I was just eager for a good night's sleep and so I laughed and dismissed their remark, but it turned out that more than just the facade was scary. When I got there, the proprietor (who runs an adjacent Indian/Pakistani restaurant) pressured me to buy drinks and food. I declined several times, insisting that I don't like alcohol. The vibe was very sketchy. He asked about my relationship status and I said I did have someone back at home, which didn't deter him from asking me if I wanted to "watch a DVD" with him. At this point I started to get pretty freaked out, but was hardly in the position to leave as I was five or six miles from town and it was dark out. I asked if I could pay for my room, as I wanted to get to sleep, but he couldn't figure out how to work the credit card machine -- apparently the usual manager was no longer in the building -- so we decided to resolve the payment issue in the morning. I was the only guest that night, and it appeared that I had been the only guest for quite some time. The bathroom was dirty, and one of the planks of my bunk lay in the far corner of the room. A hole in the floor was stuffed with newspaper, and my door didn't lock. The last part was the most distressing factor for me, given my strange encounter. The proprietor knocked several times with bogus questions, which I quickly dismissed. I did manage to get to sleep, finally. The bed was comfortable enough, and miraculously I made it through the night without further harassment. The next day, he still couldn't get the credit card machine to work. Though my funds were limited, I did have a small amount of cash on me, but at this point I'd decided that I ought not pay for the horrible experience I'd had (between the filth and being accosted!), so I played dumb and was finally told to go ahead and leave. I guess the proprietor thought that he was entitled to harass me further in the absence of monetary compensation (due to his own incompetency!), so as I opened the door to leave, he lunged towards me and bleated "Let me kiss you!" Caught off guard, I simply barked "I don't think my husband would like that very much!" and firmly closed the door behind me. Free at last! — American traveler (2006-11-07)
