The Hostelz.com Review
Shangrila Hostel is a brand new hostel (since May 2010) in Cahuita and a great addition to the Cahuita accommodation scene. The owner is a friendly Italian guy and there are dorms and private rooms available; kitchen and internet access; free tea, coffee, and drinking water; and it is right next to the bus stop.

The Location

The Shangrila Hostel is right next to the bus stop. As you exit the bus stop turn left and it is the first plot on the left. It has a wired fence, a bright sign and a large lawn. It's set at the back of a large property under the trees so you don't hear the road and which gives it a jungle feel. Cahuita is not exactly a big town so the hostel is close to everything. It's about a five-minute walk to the shops, restaurants, beach, and nature reserve.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two, three, or four beds per room and they are all set around the main house. The rooms are clean, simple, and a good size. The rooms have fans and screens but you definitely need bug spray -- there are literally hundreds of mosquitoes. There are bedside tables, reading lights, and a cupboard (of sorts) in the rooms but they lack hooks. The bathrooms are modern and clean with hot water and a nice setup.

Common Spaces

The main house has an open plan and is surrounded by a balcony with couches, chairs, tables, and a TV. The kitchen is also here as well as one computer for internet access (included). The kitchen is clean and has new equipment and everything that you need. Tea and coffee as well as drinking water are available for free! The owner is very friendly and lives above the common area and spends most of the time there. When we were there, guests got a free cocktail at one of the local restaurants (but this could possibly be an opening special).

Summary

Shangrila is a great place to stay in Cahuita and to meet other travelers. It's good value, modern, clean, safe, and has a very relaxed atmosphere. Although it has some of the small things missing (like hooks), a kitchen, internet, and drinking water are all a great touch and the brand new and modern facilities are all great.
