The Hostelz.com Review
Situated in the mountains, Screag An Iolair Mountain Centre Hostel provides breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Driving up to the hostel is a bit of a precarious mission -- the road is narrow, unpaved, and occasionally has sheep. The hostel is quite a ways up the road, around four kilometers, so having a vehicle is very helpful. Once you arrive at the hostel, there is free parking, enough for about four or five cars. You enter the hostel through small wooden gates and the owner of the hostel will probably greet you, show you the place, and offer you tea and excellent conversation.
The building itself is like an old farmhouse and has character and charm that we haven't encountered anywhere else on our trip. That said, it is equipped with all of the modern amenities you could need, including two gas stoves, two fridges, a washing machine, and hot showers. There are a variety of bedrooms to choose from -- some with bunk beds and others with double beds, depending on how many people you would like to share your room with. They also have private rooms for a few more Euro. The beds are so comfortable that getting out of them every morning is a challenge. Sheets are provided at no extra cost.
While the bedrooms may be private, the washrooms are shared. There are two full bathrooms with a shower, toilet, and sinks, and one bathroom with just a toilet and sink. Even when the hostel is quite busy, there is no problem at all getting into the washrooms when needed. The showers are hot. The owners request that guests take short showers (no longer than five minutes) because all of the water in the area comes from one mountain spring. This is a small price to pay for such a picturesque setting.
The kitchens are fully equipped with cooking and eating utensils. If the hostel gets busy, there are two kitchens -- both are very nice. The living room is attached to one of the kitchens and has a large dining area, some couches and chairs, a wonderful collection of books, and a roaring fire every evening. This sitting room is one of the coziest places in the country, we're sure.
The location of the hostel is optimal for hikers -- but be prepared to get wet! There are no trails really, except for those made by sheep, so it can be a bit slow going. Ask the owner for tips on where to go. You can hike to a small lakes and enjoy a wonderful lunch and a very cold swim. If you have a vehicle, then Glenveagh National Park is only about half an hour away (if that) and well worth the drive. If you are into traditional music, there are wonderful sessions in a nearby town with incredibly talented musicians. Again, the owner can give you lots of ideas of what to do -- he will undoubtedly have a good suggestion. Overall this hostel is unforgettable. If you are in Ireland, you must go here.
