Quirky and full of soul! Just loved this place! The energy, soul, laid back vibe, old rooms, blazing fires, quirky fire-lit bathroom, blues breakfast, owners humour, friendly dogs, interesting folk, good conversation, cinema, location, and more! The world is losing it's soul to the system but not in this place! If your creative and have imagination then stay here! — Stephen Mather , Éire (2012-01-11)

We LOVE this place We planned to stay at the Old Monastery for one or two nights but ended up staying five! Its an amazing building, old worldy with high ceilings, fires lighting and quirky objets d'art at every turn. Its in a great location with the entrance to Connemara National Park practically in the back garden. The owner Stephen left us to our own devices which suited us. In the mornings we were greeted with great sounds and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting from the breakfast room. There was real butter, homemade porridge, scone bread and Stephen batting the breeze with the guests. Dinner wasn't available every night but on two evenings we had amazing vegetarian food. Great homemade soups, vegetarian bakes, pastas and on one occasion freshly caught fish. On other evenings we cooked in the well equipped kitchen. We ate in the main living room at a great dining table complete with candelabra and huge fireplace and shared stories with the other guests. There's good craic in the pubs and a couple of good places to have lunch nearby. We'll definitely be going back. — John & Emma , Irish (2011-07-14)

Calm and relaxing, an uncommon place we stayed 2 days in the old Monastery. It is a surprising place full of strange objects the owner collects. Consider you're going to stay in an old and haunted building with the charm of a country manor. We enjoyed the quietness of the living room near the fireplace and the homemade breakfast Stephen prepared for us. the beds are comfortable and the showers are fun with the bluelights, the fireplace and the radio on all day and night! Marion, the French employee was really helpful! We'll recommend this Hostel for those who are willing to experience something really different from the common, characterless and busy brand new youth hostels you can find everywhere in Ireland. Thanks for everything! — Mélina , France (2011-06-15)
Don't Go I found the staff condescending and unavailable. the place is run-down and the owner seems insane. I was at this place before a few years ago and nothing has really changed now. it's a beautiful area of the world, but better to pitch a tent somewhere or stay on one of the islands. — Anonymous , American (2011-05-19)
Poor quality and dirty linen, staff are ignorant, the place is grubby I really have to advise everyone not to go here. I arrived expecting great things because of good reviews but it has proved to be totally false. The sheets were stained and I got the impression that the owner was only concerned with taking my money. — James Magrazhi , Croation (2011-04-24)

The Coolest Place I've Stayed Every room is themed from different parts of the world, the facilities are clean, and you get a hot breakfast. Plus the place is huge with a ton of character. What more could you ask for? — Christine , United States (2007-11-23)

Having visited hostels all over Ireland I must say that this hostel is a gem. In the last couple of years the hostel has been almost completely renovated and now has outside covered decking overlooking the courtyard -- warmed by an outside fire that serves to keep the midges at bay and has the advantage of allowing you smoke in comfort (a rare experience in Ireland now). If you're looking to chill out, this is the place. Relaxed athmosphere, plenty of books and quirky features it's a place that is difficult to leave. This hostel just keeps getting better but the excellent restaurant isn't open as often as it should be. — Stiofan O Ceallachain (2006-03-21)
