The Hostelz.com Review
While the little town of Feakle -- home of Loughnane's Holiday Hostel -- may prove a little difficult to find, it's well worth the effort. As you drive into town, you will travel down the main street of the town, which is lined with colourful character homes, one of which (the orange one!) is the hostel. You can park for free right outside the hostel along the main street of the town. Without a vehicle, this hostel would be hard to get to. The hostel owner is friendly and helpful and gave us a personal tour of the property once we arrived.
The hostel is not new, but very clean and comfortable. There is a living/dining room with couches and a table for eating. The dining room table overlooks a small backyard (equipped with a patio set and clothes line) and was the perfect spot for reading a book and enjoying a cup of tea. The kitchen is very small, but well equipped with cooking and eating utensils, a fridge, and a freezer. A bonus is the washing machine in the kitchen available for use at no extra cost -- except you might need your own soap. At most other hostels it costs a small fortune to wash clothes, so having the opportunity to do it for free is great!
The upper floor of the building is equipped with nine beds (some are bunks) for sleeping in. The mattresses are comfortable and the quilts sufficient to keep us warm. Also, there are a few small heaters throughout the hostel that can be adjusted by guests. The hostel has two bathrooms. The one upstairs is a full bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet, while the downstairs one has only a toilet and sink. Both are clean, and the water is nice and hot for our showers.
The price per night is comparable with other hostels in Ireland. If, however, the hostel is full, it may not be the greatest place to stay. The small kitchen and one small dining table would not accommodate more than four people at a time. Perhaps try calling ahead and seeing how full the hostel is at that time. As well it is recommended to call in advance, as there is not always staff at the hostel (they live next door down the street).
Undoubtedly the best part of this little town is the music. The local pubs have some of the best traditional music sessions we've heard -- and are reputed as some of the best in the country. If you like traditional Irish music at all, then staying in Feakle is a must. Overall, this hostel is excellent. If the idea of spending time relaxing in a little town by day and listening to fantastic traditional music by night appeals, then Feakle is the place to go.
