The Hostelz.com Review
The Bearded Monkey is one of the most popular hostels in Granada. It's conveniently located, has a great atmosphere, and is a comfortable place to stay. They can help organize a couple of trips around Granada and have a lot of information about other hostels in the country and friendly staff.
The Location
The Bearded Monkey is about a five-minute walk from the central park in Granada. It is easy to find on the second street to the west of the park and a couple of blocks north. If you arrive by bus, you shouldn't have a problem finding it -- they have a large sign outside their door. Most of the sights in Granada as well as nice restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance. There is a small shop fairly close, but the supermarket is a bit of a walk on the other side of the market.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The Bearded Monkey has a couple of options for private rooms as well as fairly large dorms. The private rooms are nice and fairly spacious -- the loft is a little less so. The dorms have a large number of bunk beds and because of this can sometimes be a bit cramped with everyone's bags and clothes around. Most of the rooms are set around the courtyard and can be a bit noisy at night, but those around the back are slightly quieter. The bathrooms, set at the back of the hostel, look like they might need a bit of a clean but are not too bad. There is no hot water, which will most likely not be a problem as it is almost always hot.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a bar and restaurant in the courtyard where there are also a couple of places to sit back and relax. There is no kitchen so you'll be relying on the restaurant or eating out. There is a TV room and you can rent a wide range of DVDs and sometimes they show free movies. Internet access is included in the rate and there are four computers for the guests to use. The only problem with these is that you are not allowed to plug anything (cameras, flash disks) into them, but there is a cheap internet cafe across the road if you need. A laundry service is available and there are a large selection of books available for exchange.
Summary
It's a nicely run and set-up hostel that has almost everything you need, except for a kitchen. There are normally a lot of guests and a good, party atmosphere and in general it seems pretty safe and clean. Overall this is a good choice for a place to stay in Granada.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
Gross, Uncomfortable Stayed here on my first night in Granada upon recommendation from the guide book and also by its general "popularity". Common space wasn't bad, and there are computers, but the kitchen is disgusting, worst kitchen I ever saw and I was in Nicaragua alone for over a month. The beds were so uncomfortable (even by cheap hostel standards) that my friend and I moved over the next morning, even though we only had another day or two more -- it was worth the move. may have been nice at one point, but I would avoid it at all costs, there's other, nicer hostels, just as convenient and easily accessible. — Paulina Slobodan , Canada (2012-03-13)
Worst yet After traveling most of Central America and staying in Granada on two separate occasions, I couldn't quite believe how crappy this 'perennially popular' (in the guidebooks) hostel was. Got eaten alive my Mosquitos in the sweltering hot dorm room, and went to buy a bottle of water at night from the guy on duty who was playing a very loud disruptive game of cards with his sleazy friends -- all of whom were so stoned it took me ten minutes to be able to pay them for the water. None of the staff could speak English, the toilets and showers were terrible and dirty, there was no atmosphere nor area where guests might want to hang out together. This hostel may have been popular in the past, but is now a complete dump with rude staff. — Sally , Australia (2012-01-23)
