Hostelz.com's Review
Sanya Backpackers is a truly superb hostel; the scene is set when you arrive and are greeted by one of the proprietors, Chris or Linda. From then on you are always addressed by name. The location is good, the hostel is very well maintained, and the facilities are properly clean, while the room prices are very reasonable. Wi-Fi is free and good throughout and smoking is only permitted outside.

The Location

The biggest problem is finding the hostel, as it is tucked away in a small side street; with the information supplied by the hostel and the Hostelz.com-exclusive photo of this street entrance, you shouldn't have too much difficulty. It's less than one kilometre from the local (very Russian) Dadonghai Bay beachfront with quite good sands and cloudy but quite clean sea. The fifteen-minute bus ride to town is no problem. The well-known Yalong Bay further to the east is a 30 minute or so bus ride (it's not bad by Chinese standards but pricier than Dadonghai Bay). There are loads of restaurants around though they are a bit pricier than in the town itself, but no nearby supermarket, only a couple of corner shops.

Rooms and Bathrooms

We used two private rooms and later the dormitory and are impressed by the standard of them, especially the cleanliness. Some rooms have a TV/DVD, some a good-sized desk, so just let the proprietors know what's important to you. Some bathrooms are a little small, but the cleanliness, what most of us care about, just cannot be criticised. Water pressure in the bathrooms is low but the showers are still fine and in an environmentally aware era, not such a bad thing; all WCs that we saw are Western.

Common Spaces

As this is a tropical location, almost all common area is outside, most with some shade protection. The largest is the bar area, with the bar open during the evenings and selling at reasonable bar prices. At all times beer, juice, and water are available at street prices from reception. There's also a smaller non-bar area, and the small computer room. Guests are required to remove outside footwear at the door and to wash off sand from themselves when returning from the beach, which helps keep the interior clean. Even so, the floor is swept and mopped several times a day.

There are several world maps around the walls where guests are encouraged to add a pin in their home country. There's also quite a bit of info about travel and facilities nearby, but if you cannot find what you want, ask!

Summary

This is a quality establishment that is well worth a stay. During our stay, we had a good international mix and we regularly did things together and chatted outside; everyone was very satisfied except that we generally felt that the add-ons (food, washing, bike hire) are a bit pricey, but as with everything else these are of good quality, and as they are add-ons, you can take 'em or leave 'em!
