Funky Monkey Hostel is just one in a row of stereotypical hostels found in Asian capitals with no style, no creativity, no added extras, just the bare minimum to keep the costs low. It is a nice surprise though that despite what all the booking platforms say, breakfast is in fact included in the price!
The Location
Funky Monkey is located in the central touristy area near the Mekong River. This area is full of hostels as well as other types of accommodation providers, trendy restaurants, souvenir shops, and supermarkets. There are plenty of money-exchange offices around as well, even though these are all closed during the weekend. In the evenings, there is a huge market and fun fair next to the river bank, which is literally on the doorstep of the hostel. However, as this is a popular party area, you should expect loud music coming from the street late into the night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers rooms on three levels, most of which are dorms. The top level is taken up by an enormous dorm of sixteen beds. There is one bathroom per floor and there is a separate Wi-Fi network on each of them as well. The bathrooms are in a horrible state though; they are dirty and disgusting, except maybe for the one of the ground floor. The dorms have bunk beds with lockers under them but you will need to bring your own lock. There is also one electronic plug and one bedside lamp per bed, but you would want to hope that the person in the bed opposite you won't be using the lights as they are too bright and might keep you awake. There is an air conditioner in the room but it is only turned on centrally at 11 p.m. One annoying thing is that if somebody uses the bathroom, the water pump will make a loud noise just outside your room.
Common Spaces
The ground floor of the hostel houses the reception, dining room, and common area. This part of the hostel is quite uninviting; the furniture is really faded and the sofas are full of holes. There is an LCD-screen TV though. However, as the receptionists are chilling here the whole day, you might not feel comfortable socialising here. Therefore, most people chill in the rooms and talk there, which is a bit annoying if you want to take a nap during the day. There is also a tiny terrace in front of the hostel with wooden furniture, but it is too hot during the day to chill out here.
Summary
At Funky Monkey, you get what you pay for -- a simple place and basic comfort with some sources of annoyance, but all in all, it is not a bad deal for the money you pay.

Funky Monkey Hostel Property is 15 km from the airport, 25 km from the Thai border and at least 15 km from any bus station. Tell the Tuk Tuk or Taxi driver to go to Mixay Temple on Francois Ngin Road, the property is across the street from the Mixay Temple. You can call the property for directions, we speak English and Laos.
