The Hostelz.com Review
Hole in the Wall Backpackers is difficult to reach but provides one of the best low cost yet comfortable accommodation options for those who wish to experience one of the more attractive stretches of South Africa’s spectacular “Wild Coast.”
The Location
Hole in the Wall Backpackers is located on the grounds of Hole in the Wall Hotel, named for a spectacular coastal rock formation, which is the main local attraction. It can be reached by car in approximately two hours from the district capital, Mthatha, either directly or via the coastal settlement of Coffee Bay at a distance of seven kilometers, on a heavily potholed road. The road from Coffee Bay is even worse than the direct route, but Coffee Bay is worth a visit and has a popular hostel which travelers without their own transportation can reach via a shuttle service from Mthatha. Onward transportation to and from Hole in the Wall is via taxi or a spectacular coastal hiking trail.
Self-caterers need to bring their own groceries from Mthatha. The hotel compound is surrounded by a security fence, which enables guests to escape the throng of would-be guides and salesmen who tend to congregate outside the gates, and is constantly patrolled by security guards. The securely guarded front entrance is accessible by motor vehicle, and guests can walk to the beach and the Hole in the Wall rock formation and nature reserve via a similarly guarded pedestrian gate. There is ample free parking within the hotel compound.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The backpacker sleeping accommodation is situated in a separate building at some distance from the main hotel building and consists of a mixture of double and twin rooms and a multi-bed, mixed-sex dorm. The dorm is not usually locked, but reception in the main hotel building will issue keys to individual safes for the storage of guests’ valuables, also in the main hotel building, in exchange for a returnable deposit. Each of the rooms, including the dorm, has its own bathroom. A nearby building houses a reasonably well-equipped self-catering kitchen/dining area and shared, mixed-sex bathrooms, also used by tent campers. There is space to change in the shower area, and there are hooks for clothes and soap dishes.
Common Spaces
The dorm building has a veranda with tables and chairs, and the building containing the kitchen and shared bathrooms also has a veranda with chairs, tables, and sofas. In addition, backpackers have free use of many of the hotel facilities, including the restaurant and TV lounge in the main building, the swimming pool, and the poolside bar and shop. The hostel is popular with families and travelers of all ages, and smoking does not seem to be a problem, especially as it is prohibited inside buildings, and the facilities are clean, tidy, and well maintained.
Summary
Hole in the Wall Backpackers is recommended for its reasonable rates, friendly, helpful staff, and perhaps the highest standard of security in the area.
