Hostelz.com's Review
Khaosan Rainbow Hostel & Guesthouse is perfectly located for staggering home from a night out on Koh San Road just yards away. It's not a party hostel, but you won't need it to be with what's on your doorstep. Although it has an Indian restaurant instead of a common area, meeting other people up for a night out will certainly not be hard.

The Location

Every taxi and tuk-tuk driver anywhere near Bangkok knows Koh San Road, so just ask to be dropped off there. You're going to get overcharged when heading to this district, especially if they think that you've just gotten off a plane. If coming from the airport, take the sky train to the final stop, Phaya Thai. Koh San Road is a buzzing tourist street -- one end has a Burger King and the other has a large bar called Gullivers (you will want this end). Rainbow is almost opposite and can be easily pointed out by one of the many tuk-tuk drivers or hawkers that will be standing around.

Rooms and Bathrooms

You don't choose this place for luxury. The rooms are cramped, its a bit rundown and the beds are so creaky that you may think they will collapse at any second. For the price you'll pay, though, you probably won't care. There's only a few bathrooms, but they do have hot water, which is rare for a Bangkok hostel in this price range. There are fans in the rooms and there are lockers free to use on the ground floor next to the check-in desk. Wi-Fi is strong.

Common Spaces

There's a few tables out the front where you can sit, but that's about it. The rest of the ground floor is an Indian restaurant. The food is great but there are some much cheaper Thai food stalls near by if you're on a budget.

Summary

As a hostel, there's not really that much on offer. It's perfect, however, if you want somewhere to party on your doorstep and then wake up to a hangover curry. Meeting new people to go out with should be pretty easy; you will only see the odd stayer in the restaurant, but your dorm will be packed with other people looking for a night out, as that really is the main reason for staying here.

2   Grubby, windowless sweatbox, but cheap and central. Stepping into my room was like walking into a sauna. On the other hand, a window would have let in all the noise from Khao San, aka party central. Worst part of Rainbow -- it looked like someone barfed all over the walls of my room and no one cleaned it up. Best part -- hot water and good wifi. Some rooms looked decent; I'd avoid the one directly under the staircase. Rainbow is right in the middle of the action, if that's your thing. Worth what I paid. 4   Very basic, but the best location It's a very basic hostel -- no common spaces, crowded rooms, no kitchen, no breakfast ... but it's located very close (50 meters) to Khao San street, but without the noise of Khao San. The price is also a reason to choose this hostel. Next time in Bangkok I'll return here.  , Spain ()
