Description

The Hostelz.com Review

HI - Whistler - New Hostel is a basic and very clean hostel located outside of Whistler. There is free parking (which is a rarity in Whistler), however the compromise is being outside of Whistler. There are, however, a few restaurants and markets, as well as the Whistler Brewing Co., within walking distance of the hostel.

The Location

The hostel is located in the Olympic Village, which is about a twenty-minute drive from Whistler Village. There are local buses that operate to and from the village and creekside, however it is better for travelers that have a car. There are a few short hikes, as well as day hikes which are nearby, including the Chekamus Lake hike. The closest bus station is in Creekside, which is about five kilometers from the hostel. The hostel is only located about a two-minute drive from the Sea to Sky Highway, which is the main highway that runs from Vancouver to Whistler and beyond.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Beds are very uncomfortable -- the type of bed that you sink into, and which offers no support. Rooms are quite spacious, and there's plenty of room to keep you bag and belongings. There are both dorm rooms and private rooms available. The bathrooms are quite big, with hot water showers, and toiletries available in some rooms. There is plenty of room to hang towels and get changed.

Common Spaces

There is a TV room, pool table, and games room, as well as a computer area, with a couple of computers for use. There is also a large dining area, and large communal kitchen, with plenty of area and fridges to keep food and drink. There is also bicycle storage, an onsite coffee shop, and plenty of tourist information about attractions in Whistler and beyond. All the common areas are very large, modern, and clean.

The hostel is suited for guests of all ages, however there tends to be a lot of younger people that stay at the hostel, and there is no set quiet time (there's no rule to be quiet after a certain time), which means you might be woken by drunk rowdy teenagers in the night.

Summary

The hostel is quite expensive for what it offers, however there are some discounts available, if you stay longer or have an HI membership. If you book in advance and shop around then you can find other better deals, closer to Whistler Village. If you are traveling in a large group, it might be better to rent an apartment or lodge for the week. Overall, the hostel provides basic services, but is a great place to meet other travelers, if you're flying solo.

Coffee or tea in the morning
I would just add some kind of beverage to be given in the kitchen, since the cafe (restaurant at the entrance) was so expensive).

Beautifully presented but dreadfully noisy to sleep
If give this hostel with its beautiful new modern features, toiletries and TVs in private rooms a 10/10, if only we got a single nights good sleep. The floors / ceilings mustn't be well insulated because we could hear banging and scraping of furniture and suitcases, doors slamming (our room was opposite the highly frequented fire stairs) all night ... Which is a shame really, for such a great hostel it really lets it down. I've stayed in a few hostels (dorms and private) and haven't experienced noise to this extent. Lovely helpful staff and a great little cafe with cheap eats are great on a budget, and the bus service is pretty good too, as there is nothing around the hostel itself, not unlike a ghost town since the Olympians left. Overall we would stay again if there wasn't another option, as at $135CAD it's not a cheap option, although the dorms are well priced.

Modern, Clean & Comfortable
I enjoyed my 2-night stay at HI Whistler. The kitchen, dining area & rec room all have great views of the mountains. The bus stop is just steps away and the bus runs quite frequently. The staff and the people that stayed at the hostel are all friendly & nice. I'd definitely recommend staying there if you're on a budget.
