The Hostelz.com Review
HI - STF Göteborg-Slottsskogen Hostel is one of the best that we have visited thus far and offers more than some budget hotels. Forgot your toothbrush? The kiosk sells toiletries, food, and beverages. Tourist attractions closed or you just want to relax? Book the sauna for an hour -- they have special promotions where you can book sauna time and a second person in your party gets a discounted rate. Or get some "sun" in the solarium, for a very reasonable price.

The Location

The hostel is a far walk from the central train station, more than two kilometers. The location is nice as far as the neighborhood -- there's a market within two blocks. However, the hostel's location is far from most tourist attractions.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Each room is supposed to have an alarm clock but there was not one present in our dorm, so make sure you bring your own. You can bring your own bedding (pillow case, sheet, and duvet cover) or rent one from the hostel (a towel is included in the bedding rental price). There is a hair dryer in each room -- not bonus! Lockers are available in the room for a small price. There are only three bathrooms, which proves to be too few for the number of guests -- plan accordingly because you may have to wait. There is adequate heating in the rooms. Both the rooms and the bathrooms are cleaned daily -- the cleaning list was even left in our room one morning. We suggest you make your bed before you leave the hostel or you may find that someone else has taken it. Beds are assigned by number but people do not seem to follow that rule at all.

Common Spaces

The hostel is two parts that are not connected. Each part has its own common area and kitchen, both open at all times. Common areas have TVs, magazines, and comfy furniture. Free movies are played daily at 5 and 8 p.m. and there is a billiard/pool table in the dining area with a per-game charge. Look for the books to borrow or buy. An iron and ironing board is available in the corridor. Free internet access is located near the reception. A huge breakfast buffet is available for a price -- you can book at reception upon arrival.

Summary

For guests with cars, there is limited parking (for which there is a charge) so you might want to book in advance. You can wash and dry a load of clothing for a fee, and they also sell detergent. Luggage storage is free the first day with a small per day/per item charge each day after. The reception is open 8 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and until 7 a.m. on the weekends. Place luggage in storage before they go on their break! Check-out is at 11 p.m. Maps and Gothenburg Pass are available at the hostel. They also offer business services like faxing, printing, and photocopying. Overall, this place rocks!

5 Fantastic!
Great hostel in the city of Gothenburg! I've been here with a girlfriend, and we had a room for four people, but we were the only two occupants. The rooms were decent and very important, clean. There even was a television in the room! There are many restaurants and a great night-club (Lotus Bar) just around the corner! The old city is a little further to walk, but you can get there easy by public transport. If I ever come back to Gothenburg, I just know where to stay.

3 I stayed here with a group of four people in July 2006. The room we got was not that good, in fact, the room was probably meant for three people instead of four. The showers of this place need some cleaning. The breakfast is super (but that's the case in all of Sweden).

4 Great hostel, it could have been cleaner but it was definitely not that bad. Very nice breakfast and affordable.

4 I thought the hostel was excellent. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and I met some nice people. Great value for money. Will be using it again soon.

3 This was neither the best nor the worst hostel I've ever stayed in. While I didn't think it was actually dirty, it didn't really present itself as clean either. The bed was fine, but the common area and large kitchen had a feel that it didn't get cleaned often enough. Its location next to the park was fantastic and its just a short tram ride into the heart of the city. The breakfast, though not included in the price, was exceptional. Worth a return visit just for the breakfast. The hostel actually occupies 2 different buildings, and I didn't explore much of the other so it may actually be better (or worse).

2 This is the worst hostel I have stayed in. It was dirty and the beds and couches were stained and smelt awful. The staff tried to be helpful, but denied any knowledge of my request for a female dorm. I told other travelers not to stay here until it had had a good cleaning!

5 This is the best hostel I have ever stayed at. The facilities were all extremely good, the rooms were clean, the breakfast buffet was great and the staff were very friendly. It was an excellent value for the money.

5 I stayed here over ten years ago, and I still think it is one of the cleanest, most secure and modern hostels. It's great if you want a break from multi-bed dorms. It's in a residential setting, close to the tram.

5 An absolute pleasure! The Swedes know how to run a hostel! The dorms were fantastic, very clean of course, with a TV and couch/sofa bed in each one. The breakfast buffet for 50 K is fantastic value! You simply must give it a go, I even came back to Gothenburg from Copenhagen for it!

5 Fantastic hostel. Probably my favourite. Good facilities. The dorms were big but still cosy and everyone was really nice. The only downside is that you can't really walk here from the centre, you need to catch a tram.
