The Hostelz.com Review
HI - STF Kiruna Hostel is a great hostel to stay at in Kiruna, as it is in the city centre and literally a three-minute walk from the bus station (buses from here go to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi). However, check the bus schedule -- when we arrived at 8:15 on a weeknight, there were no buses available to the hostel. It is also very close to the Tourist Information Centre where you can make bookings for dog sledding and trips to the zoo. The hostel has wireless internet available, but you have to bring your own laptop, as there are no communal computers available for use (there is free internet at the Tourist Office and the public library is available).
Rooms and Bathrooms
We shared a four-sleeper room which contained two double bunk beds, a table with stools, a wash basin and some hanging space, as well as a coat rack. The room was spacious and clean. During peak season (over December/January) be sure to book in advance, as it gets fully booked on weekends. It is also one of the cheapest hostels in Kiruna (towel and bedding are not included). Sleeping bags are not allowed. The rooms have heaters and it is warm inside. We stayed in a two-sleeper on the first night there and that room had a small TV in it (MTV is one of the available channels).
There is one bathroom for the whole floor with two showers and two toilets for males and females together. There is hand soap provided, but no shower gel. The shower is big, hot, and with good pressure, but it only has one hook and not a lot of space to leave clean clothes.
Common Spaces
There is a large, fully equipped kitchen with dishes, cutlery, a stove, oven, microwave, and fridge. Adjoined is a dining area with chairs, as well as a communal TV. However, if you do not wish to cook your own food, there is a restaurant attached to the hostel that serves breakfast and lunch and supper. This is a good way to meet people if you are traveling alone. There are no lockers, but if you are staying more than a night, you can leave your stuff in the room and not have to check out. It seems fairly safe (and we left our huge bag in there for four nights without any problems).
Summary
The reception staff are very friendly. Make sure you arrive before 10 p.m. to collect your room keys, as the reception closes then. Once you have your key you can come and go as you please. Overall, the hostel is great value for money, in an excellent location, and generally clean. We would recommend it for anyone traveling to Kiruna for a few days.
