HI - STF Dalarö Hostel is Sweden's smallest youth hostel. It also is self described as the "Sweden's coziest youth hostel." They very well could be correct. The building is actually the old boat pilot's house from the 1800s. The city bought the house and converted it to a youth hostel in 1996. Located next door and associated with the hostel is a waffle house (you have to get your key from there). The hostel's small size and the closeness of the water causes an instant relaxation. The hostel staff (of one) is friendly and very helpful and the hostel is very clean and feels safe.
The Location
Dalarö is located on an island just south of Stockholm and can easily be accessible with public transportation. Parking is available. The hostel is located directly on the water, which offers some amazing views. The island is known for its unique coastal architecture -- it's well worth looking at. The hostel is situated to allow for walks along the beach and for swimming directly off the pier.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dalarö actually only has eight beds in the entire hostel, divided up into three rooms of four beds, two beds, and two beds. The rooms are clean and basic. The best view is located in the "large" room, which gives an amazing view over the water. The hostel also has two bathrooms -- one on the top floor (where all the sleeping rooms are) with a toilet and a sink, and one on the bottom floor with toilet, sink, and shower. The downstairs bathroom is located directly off of the reception. Each room has a table and chairs.
Common Spaces
The "TV room" is actually located in the stairwell outside the bedrooms. If someone is watching TV, then the guests in the large room are able to hear it. The seating is very uncomfortable. Located next to the reception is a little library and reading area. Books are provided, but all in Swedish. The kitchen is well stocked and very clean. Multiple groups can cook at the same time and all hostel guests can be in the kitchen at the same time without any problems. It also has a high chair for families traveling with children. Located on the pier, just outside the main door, is a veranda for the hostel guests that looks perfect for the summer.
Summary
Dararö probably is Sweden's coziest youth hostel -- it is small and it has the right environment. With only eight beds, it is best to call in advance and book. Weekends throughout the year are booked months in advance and midweek is even booked during the off season. This is not the hostel for you if you want a busy hostel. It is perfect for a weekend away, romantic setting, or for a quiet escape.
