The Hostelz.com Review
Puma Backpackers Hostel is a comfortable, quiet hostel run by a very friendly and helpful family. It has good facilities and is very clean with the only drawback being that it is a fifteen-minute walk uphill from the central square in Puno.
The Location
The location of the hostel is not ideal. At this altitude, a fifteen-minute uphill walk to all the action in Puno is not as easy as it sounds. If you are used to the altitude and take it slow, it's not too bad but you might want to take a taxi or mototaxi (which can be slightly cheaper than a taxi) -- especially at night as it's quite dark along the route! If the driver is not sure where the hostel is, then mention that it is behind the Mormon Church and that should help. There is one tiny restaurant near the hostel but for greater and better choice you would want to take a walk into town, the same goes for shops.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms in the hostel are clean, spacious, and well kept with comfortable and warm beds. They offer matrimonial, twin, and dorm rooms. The bathrooms are also spotless with very good hot showers!
Common Spaces
The main common space is a TV lounge with a number of couches as well as one computer with free internet. There is also a nice kitchen that has everything you might need to make a meal -- a good option unless you want to walk up and down the hill in the evening! Breakfast is included and involves jam, rolls, tea or coffee, and pancakes! They also offer a number of tours in the area and on the lake, which are a good deal, including pick-up from the hostel.
Summary
Puma Backpackers is a cozy hostel with good clean facilities and a very friendly host family. The only downside is its location but if you are used to the altitude and/or don't mind walking a bit or taking a taxi then it's not a problem.
