Jugglers Rest Backpackers has a very relaxed, welcoming, cosy atmosphere that attracts people of all ages. It has a limited amount of complimentary internet access and laundry service. Clothes can be hung to dry outside as there is no dryer. Bikes can be left safely in the garden of the hostel.
The hostel is in the surroundings of Picton, at a five-minute walk to Picton town centre, in a safe residential area near a river. Picton has many services, shops, a library, a museum, several restaurants, and supermarkets. From Picton you can take the ferry to Wellington on the North Island.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has dorm, double, twin, and single rooms, as well as a garden area where you can put up your tent. There are rooms in the main building, while other rooms are in individual chalets in the garden. The rooms are clean, with carpeted floors, with a chair; some have a chest of drawers or storage furniture. They all have windows to the garden.
The hostel has three bathrooms and there are no en suite rooms. One of the bathrooms has a big, light blue bath that can be used for some extra dollars. Showers have curtains and soap racks, but you will have to wipe the water from the floor after taking a shower. They also have extractor fans, which the hostel management recommends to turn on when you take your shower.
The hostel has a central lounge with a sofa, several armchairs and comfy chairs, and a fireplace. It is decorated in an unusual mixture of different styles. It has no TV, but there is a public computer and a radio that is always on.
The kitchen is not very big for the number of rooms that the hostel has, but it is normally not very crowded. It has one sink, one fridge, one freezer, pots, pans, cutlery, glasses, mugs, and cooking utensils. The hostel also offers several ingredients as well as food for free use by guests, including tea, coffee, herbs, and baking ingredients. The kitchen is topped off by a huge New Zealand flag on its white-painted, wooden walls. There are free-range eggs available for a small price.
The area outside the hostel has a garden for camping, as well as a main patio with hammocks and picnic benches, all full of vines. Guests are encouraged to take their shoes off when entering the building. A grey cat is always around, especially near the main door. The hostel usually offers a demonstration of fire dancing on Fridays, which is very impressive.
This is a welcoming place, in a residential area away from the noisy Picton town centre, perfect to socialise or relax.
