The Hostelz.com Review
Tampere Dream Hostel opened in the summer of 2010, so everything is new and clean and the staff are friendly. On first sight, the hostel has a very nice design, and it's on the first floor of a building close to the central station.
The Location
The hostel is located on a calm street that crosses one of the main avenues of Tampere. The hostel website provides an excellent guide for reaching the place once you arrive at the train station -- three paragraphs for only three streets! We add only one thing to their explanation -- don't cross the Åkerlundinkatu street when you reach it, it's already on the side you'll be arriving when walking from Yliopistonkatu street. Within three hundred meters, you can find a supermarket, several restaurants, and a park -- in short, most of what you would need.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The design of the dorms is interesting -- under each two-story bed there are two lockers, one for each bed, big enough to store your goods. Bring a lock, since they're not provided for free. If properly closed, the curtains can block the light from the street, even during summer when the sun doesn't go down.
The bathrooms are in good number, but there's a lot to be improved. There's no space for putting clothes, only a few hangers in the door of the cabin, so you must be careful not to let your stuff fall in the water. Also, these hangers are stuck to the door, so every day there was one (or more) fewer in the door. On top of that, the drains flood very easily -- for instance after some thirty seconds after the water was opened -- and it happens often, since the bathroom floors are constantly wet.
Common Spaces
There is a big common space in the center of the floor, that combines kitchen with tables for eating and chatting and using the free Wi-Fi connection. Books, magazines, and some comics are also available. Tea and coffee are provided for free all day. People tend to socialize a lot there, since it's the only common space (it's a great idea to gather all services in one place, people will have to meet each other there!). Around the hostel there are several clubs, so if you feel like partying you can easily return to the hostel, no matter your state of consciousness. The hostel has one computer for guest usage, but it was out of order during our stay, so we could not test it.
Summary
It is a good hostel, considering the location and newness of the hostel. The problems with the bathrooms should be solved, so the experience would be even better. If you love your shower maybe it's not the best option, but on the rest it's comfortable and clean.
