The Hostelz.com Review
Rent Rooms is a great option for budget travelers in Thessaloniki -- fantastic location, spotlessly clean, cool, and comfortable.
The Location
The hostel is centrally located, near Thessaloniki's main university campus, and close to the main streets with lots of shops and restaurants. It's quite easy to find on public transport -- take bus number 14 or 17 from outside the main train station and get off at the stop called Sintrivani Square (it is usually announced in English as well as Greek). It's just after the bus passes a ruined arch on the left. From the airport you can take buses 78 or 78N (nightbus) to Sintivani Square, or if you are arriving by bus you can take these buses or an 8, 12 or 31, or from the port you can take 14, 17, 78, 78N or 27.
So, from Sintrivani Square, cross the road and you will find a pedestrian street called Melenikou Street -- there are ancient ruins on the right hand side and a few pavement cafes. The hostel is number 9. If you are coming by car, on-street parking is available for free.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has AC throughout, so it's pleasantly cool even on the most sweltering of summer days. The whole place is very clean, and fresh bedding and a towel are included in the price. Every room has a TV and ensuite bathroom, and some have a balcony. The rooms are fairly small, and a six-bed dorm with six people and their luggage can get a bit cramped. There are no lockers in the rooms, but if you ask at the reception they will store your valuables for you. Private rooms are available as well as dorm rooms with single, double, and twin beds. All the rooms are loosely themed around a country (they have a few pictures from that country on the walls). The ensuite bathrooms are very new and very clean, and there are hooks to hang towels and clothes while you shower.
Common Spaces
The common area is on the ground floor and comprises of a seating area, outdoor cafe/bar, guest computer for internet use and small kitchen. There is a TV in the common area, and a stack of magazines (lots of National Geographic for you natural history geeks!), and a book exchange. There also a decent selection of CDs and some games. The outdoor seating area is really lovely -- a nice, shady area to sit and have breakfast or drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed and good for meeting other guests.
The bar prices are very cheap too -- they will serve you a great iced coffee for less than half of what most other cafes charge. A free breakfast is served from 8 a.m. -- guests are given the choice of cereal, toast, or a mammoth portion of sausages and egg. The common area is closed at 11 p.m., when the reception closes.
Summary
Thessaloniki doesn't have much choice when it comes to hostels, and Rent Rooms is about the cheapest place going. You don't have to worry about it being the budget option though -- they obviously set high standards for themselves here, and it's a really lovely place to stay.
