Doorus House Youth Hostel is a old home converted to a hostel. Upon entering, the reception is hard to find, since it is located down the hall, through the kitchen and into the dining room where there is a small booth set up. This house has some historical significance related to W.B Yeats and his patroness, Lady Gregory, but it has the feel of an old home and is bit too quiet. The place is a bit grimy -- the kitchen is decent but it is hard to find two dishes that come from the same set.
The Location
The hostel is south of Galway, but it is hard to get to -- you will need a vehicle. The signage is clear, but there are lots of twisting roads to get there. It is set on a beautiful lake and the dining area is lovely on bright mornings.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorms rooms are large, accommodating up to ten people each. There is only one small mirror in the room and a bathroom down the hall for both males and females, which includes showers. This is the only bathroom in the hostel and it is upstairs. The showers are small and the water doesn't come out very hard. The actual bathroom stalls are small, poorly lit, and located next to the showers. There are no keys given for either the front door or the dorms.
You are required to have a sleeping bag or your own sheets, or rent/hire a sheet.
Common Spaces
This is not a social hostel. The small groups of two or three who stay here keep to themselves. The common room is hardly used. It has information of the history of the house, a fireplace, and a table for games and gatherings but there is too much silence in the building and the oldness of the house makes it creepy if you are traveling alone.

Overall, this hostel is good for a cheap bed and that's about it. The hostel is closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which is a hassle if you are staying for more than one day. The kitchen is adequate for cooking but grimy and old. The Wi-Fi is only accessible in the dining room and there are very few plug outlets for charging. Stay here only if you can't stay in Galway city.
