The Mountain Shadow Hostel in Rossland is a clean and inviting place to stay. It is run by it's owners, a young couple, who are extremely helpful and friendly. All the staff were fun and enthusiastic. The only criticism here is that they are a bit disorganised and tend to leave the hostel unattended to go riding, which can be a problem when wanting to check out, It is advisable to let them know the night before when you intend to leave the next morning.
It is easy to find and is conveniently located on the main drag of shops in Rossland, above a grocery store. Only a ten minute drive to Red Mountain. The hostel is very clean and there are two different kitchens. There are also numerous living rooms and reading areas, along with a TV room with adequate couches.
The dorms are quite small and in typical bunk form. The private rooms are quite nice with double beds and chests of draws. It's a small and relatively quiet hostel. The vibe is very laid back and more riding, skiing based, than party party atmosphere. There is a chilled relaxed vibe. It's a small hostel, so most people go to the bar rather than party there. The bar is only a two minute walk away.
Overall Mountain Shadow Hostel is a clean and comfortable hostel with a relaxed atmosphere. It is the recommended place to stay in Rossland, and Red Mountain being one of the most amazing places to ride or ski in Canada is a must visit! — Nova , Australia (2006-03-10)

I inspected the hostel today so that I would know whether or not to recommend it to my snowcat-skiing guests and I was very impressed. From the outside, it's hard to tell, but inside they are doing a complete renovation — brand new bathrooms (very important!), clean and classy kitchens, decent carpet, and newly repainted with nice colors. The owners are also very nice, no-nonsense people. For $20/night it's a no-brainer if you're looking for a cheap and social holiday. Save your cash and use it for more skiing... or catskiing! — Paula Gaul (2005-09-29)

Brian [the owner] is great. The rooms are very clean. There is a great atmosphere among all the people who are there. I would recommend this place to anyone. It's far above what you would expect from a hostel. — Matt (2005-02-07)

I love it because it rocks. — Pete McGuire (Scotland) (2005-01-06)
