cheap, friendly, safe, bit chaotic, near shops/metro Its cheap, simple, safe, with very friendly staff. Only Newton speaks english. Nice that you can use the kitchen and fridge. Near metro, restaurants, shops, ATM, beach is more than one kilometer. Dorms are not quiet or comfortable, the private rooms were ok. System of reservation is not totally sure. Dont expect five stars in a budget hostel. The rooms in another, neighbouring building were very clean and quiet.

After travelling through many countries and having stayed in countless hostels throughout Europe, the USA, Egypt and South America, I can say without doubt that Newton's Rooftop has been by far the absolute best hostel I have ever stayed in. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a month and the hostel was always very clean and the staff extremely helpful and friendly. There is loads of good living space, balconies, hammocks, cable TV, etc., to make life living there very comfortable. And most importantly, it's in a prime location, close to the beach and the action in Rio.
I have highly recommended Newtons Rooftop Hostel to all of my friends travelling through Rio.

Newton's Roof Top is absolutely magnificent! You won't find a better person than Newton or a better hostel in Rio. Out of the three months that I spent in Brazil a couple of years ago, one month alone was at Newton's and I had to tear myself away. I'll be going back to Brazil this year and have no doubt that I'll be heading straight to Newton's Roof Top.

I lived at Newton's for a month and had the time of my life. Newton made us feel so welcome and became a good friend. The hostel is in the perfect situation in the middle of Copocabana and when you can lie on a hammock with the moonlit statue of Christ looking over your balcony, you know you ended up in the right place. I will definitely be going back.
