The Hostelz.com Review
The North South Backpackers is a very nice and clean hostel only a ten minute walk away from Hatfield's square and plaza and their shops, restaurant, and clubs. It's a beautiful walk under Pretoria's famous jacaranda trees. By bus in less than 20 minutes you can reach Church Square and the city centre of Pretoria.

The staff are very friendly and the swimming pool is cleaned every day. There's a homely feeling about the whole place, from the fireplace lit in winter and rainy days, to the common kitchen. There are small dorms (4-6 beds) and private rooms, and they all come with keys. They have internet access till 6pm (18:00) and a small in-house bar.

It is a quiet hostel, not the party kind of place, but a great location to chill out after you come back from a safari tour or any of the clubs in Hatfield.

1 Disgusting
Stay away! I arrived Friday 20 November at eight o'clock. I was welcomed by a staff member that showed me around. The house was foul smelling with people smoking and drinking in every occupied room. The girls dorm which I booked for my primary school and teenage girls is situated inside the house, they would have to pass through a room occupied by adult males that were consuming alcohol, to enter the shared bathroom. The room where I would stay is situated outside. I thought this very unsafe for the girls. The pictures advertising the lodge is clearly taken long ago, there is no sign of recent maintenance, the swimming pool is empty, many outside lights not working, wires hanging from empty light sockets. The staff member that welcomed me was under the influence and when I confronted him he admitted that he was drinking, but that he was only the security guard/garden boy. I had the manager called and although this manager denied that he was drinking, his eyes were bloodshot and his speech slow, clearly showing signs of some kind of intoxication. When I asked to speak to the owner, I was told the owner was in Dubai "organising something for 2010." I told the management that I could not make use of this facilities and that I would contact the owner to complain and ask for a refund due to false advertising. Sunday night I received an e-mail saying that due to my non-arrival at the lodge my rooms were opened up for other business! 2010 here we come!

1 This place is the worst hostel I have ever been to. Do not stay here.
Do not stay here. When I arrived at the Hostel the room I was offered was tiny and damp and dirty. There was no water in the pool. You have to pay to use the tiny pool table like you buy in a supermarket and they charge you to drink your own beer. I refused to stay in it and was offered a garden shed for an extra R480 per night. I didn't except this and found another hotel at great expense (it was the night before the second test match). Other people who stayed there where over changed and one group of guests had their car broken into in the secure car park that only guests and staff have access to. My credit card was later charged twice for over R2000. I have had to spend hours sorting it out with Visa.

1 I had an email message stating that I was welcome. when the bus was delayed I phoned to ask whether I could come late which was no problem but when I came the gate was closed and no staff around. Eventually a backbacker tried to open the gate. Being out in the dark in the middle of the night with the promise of a bed and finding the gate closed was a terrible experience. I think that in a hostel a member of staff should be around all the time. (Any backpacker who opened the gate could have let anyone in).

5 I've been here three times in three years and it is always a home away from home.
