Hostelz.com's Review
One Step Independence Square Hostel isn't actually in Independence Square -- it's closer to Golden Gate or Kreschatuk Metros (but Independence Square is five minutes' walk).

The Location

The hostel is on Patorzhinskogo, the cross street -- that's what 18/1 means -- a building on an intersection (the second number is the address on the other street, not the apartment number). Once you find it, the location is pretty good, nestled among four metro stations -- the closest is the giant, reconstituted, ancient, wooden Zoloty Vorota (Golden Gate) in the middle of a nice park, with fountain, outdoor cafe, and an eponymous Irish bar, where expats and upscale locals congregate (with free English newspapers). Other funky restaurants and bars, like Trolley Bus, line Prorizna Street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Inside, this is spread out over separate entrances, so it is bigger than it looks. The ten-bedroom is homey, but it still is all a bit cramped. One private room has just enough space for the king bed.

Common Spaces

There is no real common room -- the kitchen is a coffee counter in one of the narrow halls. They claim there is an outside terrace, but we never saw it -- unless they mean the fenced-in courtyard outside the building.

The female managers are very friendly -- this is [art of the Kristina-Artur hostel chain, which has five Kiev locations (the management doesn't want partiers or drunks due to previous problems in this location, so they are directed to another location). They hawk a fun pub tour, and Chernobyl tours, Kalashnikov shooting, and tank driving at a significant markup.

This hostel's ok -- very central, but maybe not a first choice, especially if you like more space.

4   It was all that jazz Yo! This place had some really interesting situations. It's da bomb! Way off da hook. I met some cool people. Was real nice to be in Kiev. I had fun cause it was off da hook yo! I recommend all my hommies to come here and have a great time.  , chocolate russian ()
3   Good Locations, No Common Decency Hostel is in a great location, insides and bathroom are clean. Owner (who lives there) is a bit strange though, continually just walks around in his underwear, and smokes in his room, which in turn makes the hostel smell like smoke. They also asked me to pay half price just to stay a few extra hours to wait for my train! Fair enough maybe, but I had been there over a week already! So not much common decency. Nothing terrible, but nothing amazing. Bit more expensive than other Hostels in Kiev.  , Australia ()
