The Hostelz.com Review
Bowman Base Camp Hostel is a great, fun place to relax or gear up for your trekking adventures into the great White Mountains of New Hampshire.
The Location
This hostel is located conveniently in Randolph, close to the amenities in Gorham, New Hampshire, just off of US Rt 2. Here you are deep in the majestic white mountains just north of the Presidentials -- every turn greets you with jagged soaring peaks, including Mt. Washington (the tallest peak in the northeast), which hangs luminously in the background. Fresh, white snow is still visible well into June on its jarring cornice, which rises a thousand feet over the second highest and closest neighbors. Randolph itself is a small town, consisting of little more then roads to nothing, at least from what we saw. Its closest amenities are for the most part in Gorham -- close by but also a small town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are very cozy, but clean and efficient. There is a wooden interior throughout that gives it a nice feel in the whole building. The dorms consist of two bunks on each side down a hall with rooms the same so at most you'll have four people to a room unless sharing a bed (but you'll pay for two). This is awesome, as there were four of us on this outing and it is almost like our own private room, but with no door. Still, it is pretty quiet and the noise is contained to the common area. The bathrooms are clean and private, with two of each sex provided with a single toilet type bathroom, just like at home, but with the showers in a separate area with three shower stalls per side separated by sex.
Common Spaces
The common space is by far the best part -- few people are in their dorms while conscious. It is a big, lively common area filled with many benches and tables. The abundantly full-size kitchen is adjacent to this open space and provides a great way to cook a meal and still chat with your pals. The owner is really nice and will often hang out in the common spaces and shoot the breeze. By the end of the night everyone feels like a big happy family, laughing and joking -- one guy even had some crazy mouse costume on, it was by far the nest time we've ever had in a hostel environment. There is an amazing porch on the back with a great view and a long bench that's great to just sit on and feel the breeze or watch the sunset.
Summary
This place is the best experience we've had so far in a hostel -- it feels like everyone in the building is part of the family by the time you are done. The hostel has an excellent location and a beautiful interior. It's just all around great.
