The Hostelz.com Review
Located in Bar Harbor, the heart of the Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island Bar Harbor Hostel is a perfect place to start a trip trough the Parc. All bus shuttles start form Bar Harbor and it is easy to get there by car as well as by Greyhound bus or ship.

The hostel is a small, cosy hostel. It has a ten-bed male and a ten-bed female dorm and a four-bed private dorm, which you have to book entirely. The dorms are quiet and equipped with air condition. The beds seem to be new and are more than comfortable. The sheets are clean and new, too. The bathrooms are big and clean, with one towel a week provided.

Although there are twenty-four beds, the atmosphere in the hostel is still very homelike and friendly. The staff, Nova, is extremly cooperatively and provides tons of information, you need to find the most beautiful places of Mount Desert Island. The hostel has a normal TV and also provides wireless internet access. The laundry and the dryer can be used for one dollar each and even the kitchen is for guests' convenience.

However, there are some rules which might seem absurd to some people. Neither shoes nor alcohol or smoking are allowed in the entire house. The hostel has lockout-hours, which means it's closed from ten a.m. to five p.m. and you can't get in there. It's also entirely closed after midnight (the front door will be unlocked again at eight a.m., so you can get in again).

Even if these rules seem to be rigorous, we strongly recommend this hostel for every stay at Acadia National Park.

Too many rules, not enough space
It is ridiculous not to be able to be in the hostel during the day. They lock you out all day long until 5 p.m., which is really annoying and completely unnecessary. They claimed it was for cleaning, but I saw cockroaches in the dorms and in the kitchen. The kitchen is tiny and there are too many people trying to use it at once, mainly because they let people camp in tents in the back garden but they all hang out in the hostel building during the evening, so there are too many people.

Bright, friendly, clean, convenient, comopolitan!
Best American Hostel I've stayed in. The fresh-painted primary colors lift your spirits. It's sparkling clean and neat. The bathroom is right next to the women's dorm room. The guests were quite fascinating and from all corners of the globe. Both my daughter (twenty-something) and I (not retired yet) enjoyed our visit and will probably go back. Of course, Acadia is one of the most unique places in the U.S. with its varied environments -- harbors, rocky coast, fishing villages, forests, hills, and beaches.

This hostel was terrific! It was clean, cool, quiet, and centrally located near the village in Bar Harbor. The owner, Nova, was a very nice person and was very helpful regarding local information. The other staff person, Jessica, was really great and is a real world traveler with lots of interesting stories. I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone who will be visiting Bar Harbor and Arcadia National Park.

I stayed at this hostel with my mother in the beginning of March 2006. I found the house to be clean, funky, and well situated in the downtown area. Nova, the awesome woman in charge, was friendly, resourceful, sharing, respectful, and welcoming. I had a delightful stay and was comforted in knowing that others who might drop in for a night or two would not be loud, partying all night, or coming and going at all hours. It is a charming house, and about three hundred times less expensive than the posh Bed and Breakfasts on the Island. A great savings and pleasant atmosphere to boot. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

This hostel is all about rules. You can't wear your shoes, you can't come in after a certain time, and you can't be there at certain times. And then on top of all this they only have two rooms for everyone: a women's dorm and a men's dorm (unless you get a private room). There are people coming and going at all hours so it's really hard to get good rest if you aren't a heavy sleeper. I found it really uncomfortable and left after just one night. If you are into freedom or fun, don't stay here, you're much better off camping in Acadia.

This hostel is one of the best, and is new. The hardwood floors throughout the hostel gives the atmosphere of a classy Bed and Breakfast. The bathrooms are great, and the showers are hot. The extended curfew is also a plus. I had a great week here and met a lot of people...a very good karma environment. Do not worry about the lockout. There is definitely plenty to do...hiking, kayaking, biking. Do not forget Echo Lake for a nice swim after a day of hiking the Precipice or Parkman Mountain.

This place is very clean and cozy. I slept well here, was very comfortable, and felt safe and welcome. It's in a convenient location. The hostel was nice, super-clean, with hot, well-lit showers. I wish it had a cushier common room, but the beds are comfy so you can read there. You can't get at your stuff or take shelter during mid-day hours. Still, overall it is a very good place, and Acadia is gorgeous.

The uniqueness of the hostel matches the uniqueness of the environment in which it resides. The qualities it attains should be upheld and respected by all who enter. It was a pleasure and an honor to stay at the new hostel, and worth waiting for. Thank you.
