K Road City Travelers

Hostelz.com's Review

K Road City Travelers comes with a lot of really nice extras like free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, and flexible check-in and check-out, which makes up for the little backdraw of street noise.

The Location

The location is really nice, just a short walk from the drop-off and pick-up point of the airbus. There are also bus stops for the free city link, the convenient inner link, and many other buses pretty much right in front of the house. It's not so great for people with a car, as there is no parking space close to the hostel. But it is possible to park a couple of hundred meters around the corner in the streets for free. K Road is a really good place to get all kinds of cheap food and there is a cheap supermarket just meters away. There are also a lot of cheap clothing and other shops as well as one carrying camping equipment. As the hostel is directly next to the street and next to a nightclub, there is a bit of noise pollution. When trying to find the hostel it's important to look for it's sign closely as it is just a small sign and the hostel itself is on the first floor not the ground level. The ground level is occupied by a colorful cafe called Revel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two levels in this hostel with eight rooms each. All dorms fit four people in two bunks and some are a bit smaller, some a bit bigger. All have new metal bunks (they're squeaky) with good mattresses and extra blankets available for those who freeze easily. The rooms have security lockers for valuables (not big enough for a backpack though) and some small cupboards. Some of the rooms unfortunately do not have windows and thus get pretty stuffy. Also the ventilation in those rooms increases the noise coming in from the outside.

Each level has its own bathrooms with two showers and four toilets. The bathrooms are very modern and have plenty of space to change. Rooms and bathrooms are kept absolutely super clean at all times. Bathrooms get checked and cleaned several times a day.

Common Spaces

There are two small kitchens, one on each level -- each is spotlessly clean and well equipped with all necessary utensils and free salt and spices. There is also a shelf with free food, which is usually well stocked as Auckland is the final destination of most guests before heading back to their home countries or onwards. It is in these kitchen areas where free breakfast (toast, margarine, preserves, peanut butter, eggs, sausage, milk, juice) is available from 8 to 11 every morning. On the lower level there are only three small tables and a few chairs in the kitchen area. The rest of the room is occupied by the in-house internet cafe, which is not really heavily frequented. For all with their own devices, unlimited free Wi-Fi is available throughout the whole hostel.

On the upper level there are a few more small tables and chairs next to the kitchen. There is also a little TV area with pay TV and three armchairs as well as a washing machine and dryer. The rooftop terrace that is connected to the upper level common area is very lovely -- it has one big, wooden table and a few chairs around it to enjoy the sporadic rays of sun that do hit Auckland on one or two days a year.

The hostel is deservedly popular and regularly fully booked. It is surely one of the best places to stay in Auckland if not in all of New Zealand.
