The Hostelz.com Review
Pineapple Park Hostel is located on Highway 11, 20 minutes by car from Kona and about 45 minutes from the airport. A colorful variety of kayaks and a nice, big sign help to identify the hostel. Start looking for the hostel once you passed the gas stations in Captain Cook. The hostel is across from a vehicle workshop on your right hand side.

There is visitor parking available at the hostel. Take caution, when you turn into or out of the parking area. Highway 11 is a busy road! A car is a necessity to go to a beach (10 minutes by car) or to see Kona. There is no public transportation available from the hostel.

Annie is the owner and she is often around and is friendly and helpful. Guests often gather outside at the gazebo to barbeque or hang out in a fairly relaxed atmosphere.

The TV is located in a small common area in the kitchen. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped and tolerable, but not spotless. It could be a bit crowded, as is the fridge at times.

The dorms have six beds, a big storage area with extra blankets, and a counter that could be quite useful for leaving or packing things. A fan in the room, as well as individual bedlamps provide some extra comfort. The linen and rooms are clean and it is surprisingly quiet at night, even though you are so close to the road.

The shower and sink are combined and quite unique! The toilet is next door in its own separate little room. Both areas are fairly clean.

The small hostel store offers a variety of kayaking and snorkeling equipment. A public phone and lockers are located in the lobby, close to the reception area. A bigger corner store is just a short walk away.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
1  This place should be checked out by the health authorities. Within 5 minutes of being at the Pineapple Park,Mountain View location I started feeling sick from the pervasive and strong smell of mold. So unfair to anyone sucked into staying here by false advertising. This place is old, rundown and so is the owner. We left immediately and I cannot comprehend how this place is allowed to be open. We had to find other accommodation on short notice and my e-mail to this establishment has not been replied to. I deserve an apology and certainly hope to not be charged. The man who owns this place needs to retire and stop causing vacationers so much grief. This place should be shut down and torn down.  , Canadian ()
4  Really nice hostel I like this hostel a lot.  , Poland ()
1  Island Shanty. Raving and Ranty It was cheaper for me to stay at Pineapple Park as a guest than to be the manager that I was as well. The owners social skills are limited to say the least. They are lazy filthy folks that place alcohol consumption at the top of their list. Apparently no one told them that slavery had been abolished years ago as getting paid was always a problem. And the RATS and TERMITES are a whole other issue. Avoid this place.  , California USA ()
1  Filthy and the owners were the rudest I have ever met in my travels. They will try to charge for everything, while I was there, they had not paid one of the managers, as I heard the owners discussing it with others. These people are horrible and this is not the place to relax and enjoy Hawaii.  , Switzerland ()
5  Friendy, clean I love this place. When I was there i found a nice clean place to stay, worth the money, with so friendly people. There is a common kitchen, where you can cook with people from around the world. outside there is a sitting area with a BBQ where you can sit and talk till late at night. Sure, it is a little bit outside, but it is described on the website, so I wasn't surprised, and there is a bus stop near the hostel. The owner, Doc and Annie are so friendly and helpful (if the guest are too!) and there is so much to do around the hostel. There is an fantastic snorkel bay, there is the Captain Cook monument (you can walk there, swim there, or Kayak there), the City of refuge, and something you will not find somewhere else in the world -- Wild dolphins. It was an amazing time for me and I met a lot of travelers at pineapple park. It was a great time.  , Holland ()
5  Me, my wife, and our son just stayed at Pineapple Park Kona in a private room with a private bath and we had no problems whatsoever. Annie and her husband were friendly and we had some good conversations. I've stayed in backpackers around the world and in a lot worse places. There are ants and roaches, but it's Hawaii, they're everywhere. You do need a car as you are a bit out of town, but you need a car to get around the island anyway, unless you don't mind hitching. I thought the accommodation was worth the price. we enjoyed our stay and even stayed an extra night as we were comfortable there.  ()
1  No stars is what this outfit deserves. These people are greedy, inhospitable, and should find another profession. The Kona location had a dirty, run down kitchen, outdoor toilets that clearly were not up to any building code, junk stacked around the building and the grounds, and a very rude attitude by the owners. The traffic noise started at five a.m. and was still loud into the evening. The location was not close to the water as the website suggested. The volcano location is actually miles off the highway back in a Mountain View subdivision. There were no signs indicating that the water we drank was catchment water, which is a hazard to one's health. I think the place was empty for good reason. Avoid Pineapple Park!  ()
1  The owner Annie is very rude to the few guests that were there and attitude that they don't need your business. The kitchen was dirty and only two burners of the four were working, the frig is old, rusty and leaks water all over the floor. Highway Eleven is so loud from early morning till dusk from all the traffic. Their web site is definitely misleading. No Aloha at Pineapple Park.  ()
4  we stayed at the volcano side hostel in january in a private room. we were nearly the only guests and the place is pretty much in the middle of nothing but very beautiful nonetheless. being pretty much off the road and with all the plants it has a very tropical feel to it. the private room was set up like a hotel room with private bath and very cute linens and tons of pillows (unfortunately they smelled mouldy). we had a look into the dorms and they looked okay as well with large boxes with locks to leave your valuables. the kitchen was at the far end of the rooms with a nice deck and a BBQ where you could sit without disturbing other guests. there was a large lounge with a big TV and lots of literature and the owners were very nice people. we highly recommend this place when heading to volcano!!!  ()
3  The only reason I stayed more than one night is that it was very quiet. Lots of irritating things though, Annie's signs everywhere telling you that if you put anything on another bunk then you would be charged for that bunk. 5 minute showers are unreasonable. She is very abrupt but I think that is just her way. She was kind enough to lend me her Hawaii book to read overnight. There was no access to the upper deck to see the view of the bay as said on their promo. The dorm rooms do not lock and there was no place to put my luggage out of site, had to just put it on a bench out in the open in the dorm room. The dorm rooms are open up by the ceiling so you can hear the people in the next dorm (men's dorm) so if people are noisy there, snoring and you do not have earplugs it might be disturbing. But hey it is cheap and close to the beaches (by car only). And fairly clean.  ()
3  A car is essential here. Captain Cook is a long way from Kona (and the airport) and you may feel very isolated here — I did. The hostel itself was clean enough but had rather bizarre bathrooms where you showered over the sink and there were no hooks to hang your towel, etc. I had to go through some fairly annoying rigmaroles involving plastic bags and such just to keep my towel/clothes dry when using the shower!!! There are also signs plastered EVERYWHERE!!! Do not do this, do not do that (including one saying "5 minute shower ONLY" — errrrm fine, if you are bald). You feel like you are six years old again and it got kind of annoying being confronted with these notices at every turn!!! However, the hostel is clean enough, quiet and the owner is ok if a little abrupt — I think that's just her manner though rather than any intention of being unfriendly. Kona is pretty uninspiring — I was due to stay in Captain Cook for three nights but left after two. I would personally recommend Hilo as it's far nicer than Kona and you're closer to the really good stuff like the Volcano Park and Mauna Kea — Hilo itself is very nice. Kona is very touristy and more geared towards big resorts and condo complexes.  ()
1  Although there are many signs posted up regarding house rules, I kept an open mind. I stayed in the dorms with other cockroaches. The toilets and showers are somewhat clean but are outdoor stalls without much privacy. People could definitely hear you relieving yourself when nature calls. I was particularly disturbed when one morning the owner, Annie, came into my room twice while I was sleeping to ask if I had her Glamour and Oprah magazine. She was not the most hospitable type. I felt that this was not the place to rest or bathe. I could have slept in my car for free.  ()
3  This place was decent. Staff were very helpful. It's hard to find budget accommodation on the west side of the island, so I would recommend this place to people who want to snorkel and bask in the sun.  ()
4  This place has a very rural setting up above ocean. Excellent views from deck. Also they had five dollar dinners. It's an interesting coffee farm and rural setting. Staff are very friendly and I would highly recommend this hostel.  ()
3  I stayed at the hostel a few years back, and there was most definitely an open fruit stand (though it may have closed or something), and the place was very peaceful. I was the only tenant, and the owner, "Doc Holliday", a man who smokes cigars and looks like someone called "Doc Holliday" (i.e. Ernest Hemingway) was cooking mashed potatoes and pork ribs with a Kiwi guy named Les, who had tons of tattoos. They offered me some of their food and we had a wonderful conversation. The place was quiet and clean. Note: EVERYTHING in Hawaii has mold on it. There's really not a lot you can do about it. Anyway, I had a great time and found the people to be very friendly. It wasn't the greatest place in the whole world, but it was a fun stay anyway.  ()
