Nice hostel, will be back! I was first put off by the reviews i read here, but went anyway as it was close to the mountain I was snowboarding and you wont find cheaper accommodation in this area, I was glad I did! The manager Steve, in the East lodge, is a good guy and the people staying there were all good people too. Yes I enjoyed a few drinks with some cool travelers but we were all asleep by 10pm and the people that stayed up watch tv didnt keep me up. — Si , NZ (2012-03-25)
AWFUL HOSTEL -- Very Bad Experience BEWARE! Do NOT stay at this hostel! I had the terrible misfortune of having to stay there for a night when I was working in Breckenridge last winter. I had not yet found a place to rent and so I needed a place to stay. I just wanted an inexpensive and quiet room for the night and a hot shower and place to make breakfast the next morning. When I showed up at the place there were a bunch of young teenagers staying there. They seemed to be between the ages of 16 and 21 and it appeared that they had been living there for a long time. There was very loud rap music paying in the background and there were people running up and down the hallways screaming and yelling. The manager was extremely drunk, he was stumbling around and slurring his words. When I inquired about a room he told me he'd be right back, that he had to go pour drinks for the kids. He then proceeded to line up about 20 large beer glasses and filled them all up to the top with whiskey. He then began handing out glasses to the hostel residents who were all clearly under the legal drinking age. Eventually the manager stumbled over to me, apologized for the noise, saying "We just like to party hard here!" He showed me to a private room because all the dormitory rooms were taken. When I complained about the noise he said "Well, they will eventually pass out and it will get quieter". He was so drunk that he forgot to collect my money for the room. Needless to say, I got very little sleep that night. In the morning when I went to use the public women's bathroom and showers there was garbage and giant clumps of hair on the floors of the showers and someone had apparently thrown up all over the bathroom. I went down to use the kitchen and there were a number of young people getting ready to go to work. I talked to a young girl who was Peruvian. She said that there were a bunch of kids between the age of 16-21 who were on a work program from South America. They were doing maid work and kitchen work at ski resorts and the program was putting them up in the hostel for the entire ski season. She said that the hostel was very noisy all the time and that people there party every night. She said the manager bought alcohol for them because they were under age and could not buy it themselves. I was shocked by all of this. I have stayed in many hostels in the United States and all over the world, and none of them have ever been this bad. I can't understand why the manager has not been arrested for providing alcohol to minors. I also can't understand why this place has not been shut down. It's a health hazard and a safety hazard. As far as the good reviews go on this website they have to be fake and were obviously written by the owner. Take my advice and never go to this place, it sucks! — Anonymous , usa (2012-01-24)

Great Hostel Me and a fellow cyclist stayed here during our ride across america last summer, the owners were super friendly and instantly invited us to join them in July 4th celebrations. A nice room and nice rate even included an incredible BBQ, pasta, side salad. — Ryan Anderson , UK (2011-06-10)

Good Riverside is one of the better hostels. Stayed there last winter. The people who were staying there were nice and in a mood to party. Mostly skiers on holiday and they toned things down near bedtime. Keep in mind this is a hostel, not a hotel. — DEAN CHRISTENSEN , USA DENVER (2009-11-02)
I fled in fear My friend and I drove out to Silverthorne in mid-June on our trip to Denver. It seemed ok at first, although we smelled beer on the manager's breath and a few of the guests seemed very cozy settled in. The manager had us pick our own room in the dorm wing, but both seemed to be lived in. He told us that the one female in a dorm for females was a big partier and we might not like that room, so we chose the other room -- which looked more like a college dorm with tapestries, incense, and Christmas lights up. We picked up some food and ate in the kitchen (which did not even have dish soap!) as the guests, about a dozen or so, started drinking and playing loud music. It seemed these people all knew each other and had been there for a long time. One couple was there with a little toddler, who was running around unattended while his parents were partying with the others. I think there was drug use going on too. We just decided to go to sleep, but when my friend looked under the sheet, she found hair in it. Luckily we had not paid yet and there were other hotels in the town, so we decided just to leave. The whole atmosphere was like a flophouse. Everybody apparently knew one another and were coming in at night and drinking, partying in the common room, whatever else. So when we left, the manager followed us wanting money for the time we had spent eating (even though we didn't even use anything), so we ran to the car, threw our stuff in, and locked the doors! I was safe enough to roll down the windows and tell the manager that this was not a hostel -- I have stayed in many over the years! He took our license plate number and pretended to call the cops. Oddly enough, when we checked in at a much nicer place just up the street, the receptionist there said that every time he tried to call the hostel, no one ever answered, so he'd always assumed it was closed. We relayed our story and reported the situation to the police. The manager had never even reported us for leaving, but the officer I spoke with said it did sound like a safety situation and that she would be very unlikely to charge us for a crime over that. I have stayed in many hostels over the last five years and consider myself pretty lenient, but this place went extremely too far. I can't believe it's advertised on a hostel and can be found on any reputable listing. I highly recommend getting a hotel room in Silverthorne, or going to one of the other hostels in Denver or the region. — Jennifer , USA (2009-07-16)

It was a little bit of heaven in Silverthorne -- the Riverside Lodge Paul, Steve and Robert made our recent stay just the best. I felt comfortable enough to walk around with just my green wool stockings on. The conversations were insightful and whenever Janet and I needed additional information to find our way around Silverthorne, Dillion, or even Keystone, everyone just naturally spoke up with answers. It was the best and we will definitely be back for another visit. — Cindy Lowry , USA (2009-02-12)
DO NOT STAY AT THIS DUMP!! FRIEND WOKE IN MIDDLE OF NIGHT AND OWNER WAS IN BEDROOM!! STAFF ARE DRUNKEN SLOBS. ANY POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THIS PLACE ARE SURELY WRITTEN BY OWNER DISGUISED AS PATRON. IF YOU STAY HERE BRING PERSONAL BODYGUARD AND THE ORKIN MAN!!! STAY AT OWN RISK! — b.c. (2007-01-20)

Alpenhutte is a nice place. Good atmosphere. Nice mix of people from all over the world. Nice lounge with fire place to meet other travelers. And big kitchen with sufficient stuff. But most of all the location is brilliant. Within easy ride to A-basin, Keystone, Breckenridge. And for Beaver Creek and Vail you only need I-70 to get there. Anyway, good value for money. — Saskia (2007-01-15)

Best location among hostel in the Summit County. On free bus route, opposite the Silverthorne Recreation Center, a few minute walk from the library and the Silverthorne Transfer Station, right beside a creek where you can do fly-fishing. The host, Eric and his staff were nice and helpful. Can't beat it for the price. The place is nice and reasonably clean. Among the best hostel I have ever stayed in. Good value for money. — Kai (2006-05-19)

I stayed at this hostel for a month this winter and was pretty happy with the set up. Everything you need is there and it's clean and bright and there are decent-size common rooms. Staff are good, and best of all it's truly less then five minutes from the shuttle bus stop to go to any of the Summit County resorts. Silverthorne is not exactly rocking, and the hostel doesn't have the buzz of city hostels, but again there is the bus to Breck or Frisco. Just be careful to be back before midnight or you might have a long cold night under the stars! — Colum (2006-04-18)

I stayed there last winter. Here my impressions:
plus:
+ helpfull staff
+ clean
+ prize
+ discounted lift tickets
+ central location (summit stage busses, shops)
minus:
- curfew @night
- kitchen closed @night
- not very sociable (nearly empty)
- cold rooms — andrew (2005-12-06)
I guess everything was okay, but the guy who ran the hostel was a jerk, trying to scam you out of every nickel and dime. — Doug (2005-02-07)

You can't beat it for the price. No, it's not a five-star hotel, but it's not priced like one either. The spa across the street is great!! The owners made a nice Thanksgiving dinner for all the guests. — Shelly (2005-01-25)
BEWARE!!! This is perhaps the worst hostel experience I have ever had. The only redeeming quality of this moldy, smelly hostel is the large kitchen that is great for preparing food. Other than that, the owner, Eric, was creepy, moody, and ripped off one of the other customers, literally taking his money and refusing to refund the cash. He harassed guests for payment, when they'd already paid, and would only believe after shown proof of payment by a receipt IN HIS OWN HANDWRITING. The whole time there, he had to have been on either sedatives or alcohol. There was also a problem with bedbugs or some sort of insect that was in the beds, biting other guests. Do not dare to pay ahead, or you will not get your money back. If you have to stay here, pay one day at a time. Other hostels are in Summit County, and have bus service nearby to them. I would not recommend this place to anyone, even if they were on a budget. — Jon (2004-12-17)
The description listed on the Internet and through REQUEST FOR INFORMATION for this hostel is very misleading. The facility has not been kept up, and the pictures shown were taken many (several) years ago. Deception in advertising is the word of the day at this hostel. — Melman (2004-11-21)
