2 Not too safe
This hostel wasn't the worst I've seen but there were a lot of things I wasn't too keen about. I'm not sure about the other rooms, but our suite (two bedrooms along with a kitchen and bathroom) had a fire escape in the back. That was nice, but it was kinda unsafe when you consider how easily accessible our room was to the outsiders. So we just left our windows closed and hid our valuables. Wanna shower? You'll have to go down to the basement and deal with their dingy shower in a bathroom with a door that doesn't lock. And now for the good things about this hostel -- Nice people, close to the state capital and the 16th st Mall (although the neighborhood between the hostel and the Mall isn't so safe), and the beds were pretty comfortable.

4 Like a short-stay hostel ought to be
If you are looking for the sanitized and comfortable all-mod cons hostels, this hostel will disappoint (to say the very least). I stayed here in February and the room was cold. I had to sleep fully clothed. It is not suitable for a long stay. Whilst it is certainly the case that the place is old and rundown, it is not dirty as some others have suggested. John, who runs the place, is a really nice guy who I found to be courteous, and who went out of his way to provide information and to print stuff off for me from the PC with no charge. The hostel also provides unlimited free internet and coffee. John also took time to engage in interesting conversations and was extremely helpful and informative. For $12, I wasn't expecting the Ritz and neither should anybody else. If you are, I suggest you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a place that is cheap in an excellent location that is not your usual boring sanitized corporate hostel, but has individual character as well as interesting, helpful, and informative staff, then this place fits the bill.

1 Going back to normal
I was at this hostel some time ago. I saw several things being done to get this hostel up and running good. While at the same time I heard several reasons why the owner did not want to do this. This placed was filed with crackheads, drunks, and people with no life or home paying almost nothing to stay. After a couple months of hard work, that was getting better. Most of them were removed. And the placed was being cleaned up and fixed for the actual guests who should be staying there. Most of the guests owed the hostel in the amount of $1,400. At that time it was only $11 a night, and $9 if you stayed by the week. That's a lot of free time. Rooms were cleaned and painted. Walls and ceilings were getting fixed (major damage) and it was looking nice. Guests were coming again, and loving it. Movies were being played on the roof with a large TV, which was great. And everyone loved it. There were still some problems, and the guy working the desk was doing his best to take care of it, but I noticed that the owner was always stepping in and stopping him, saying legal problems. This guy does not work there anymore, yet I keep contact with him. I saw the hostel not that long ago, and I noticed that it is going back to the way it was before, which is really sad. While I was there, I asked where he was, and I was told that he left. But was also told that it was a good thing because he was taking money. I find this hard to believe. For a guy to work there and only get $100 a week, and then to put up with a owner who refuses to change anything, and then go out and bring his own money in to help the hostel, it's not right. And I'm glad he left. I feel sorry for what he had to go through. Now just to let everyone know, don't expect this hostel to be open too much longer. Even though the owner is a mason member, this building is in violation of several city and state codes. And should be condemned. And I also hear that the guy I was speaking of is also filing judgment against the hostel for the money he put into it. Which he should be paid back. But if you do stay there, have fun. Yes, people do go through your stuff. It is full of mice and roaches. And several rooms are loaded with food dated years ago.

5 Loved it.
The staff and owner were always there to help. Everything is close by -- actually walking distance -- library, internet, cheap, clean, and renovations were being made to the hostel while I was there. I actually participated in some of the renovations. Secure, phones, a really great place to stay. Thanks D*ck for everything you did to help.

5 Great time, summer camp for adults
During the winter months the management takes American guests a few of them are long termers. during the summers they do the same for internationals on J-1 Visas. all I can say is that I had a great time here.Yes the owner is a bit eccentric, but all in all he is a very nice guy willing to go out of his way to help a person out. Ann is one of the most genuine people I ever met. For those that would complain about the long termers, well these people keep the place clean (which isn't the easiest job in the world), basically for a discount on their rent, and they also assist other guests with their travels and such. All I can say is its inexpensive, safe, clean enough for what it is and the level of staff there is. And the place is a blast for the vast majority of people. 4th of July was a fantastic time, with 80% occupancy and nearly everyone in attendance for a BBQ and other festivities. the majority of people I met on the way through were very, very friendly, and it's just a great place to meet cool people and have fun. You may find yourself going to the pub with a guy from Denmark here for a Mensa convention or out to Sancho's with a cute girl from Punxatawny. After my extended stay here all I can say is I met some of the best people I've ever met and hope to stay in touch with them for a very long time.

3 Neutral
I stayed at the old one in 2003 up the street but feel that explaining my impression of the hostels in Denver from a philadelphia guy angle. We can't have places like this in are area where an educated person can go for these prices, leave your bags and not have at least a fifty-fifty chance of getting robbed or killed. It is a testament to the relative safety of the city and coolness of visitors and populace. It will get old and you will get stale in your right. A group of new people will come in and take over for that month. But to go out to a city and live cheap, get on your feet, and meet people from all over the world -- you can't beat it.

1 If you stay here you are out of your mind
even for thirteen dollars this is not a bargain. There are cock roaches the size of tarantulas, it is mice infested -- I think I got scabies from a mattress, the owner is creepy and surfs porn behind the front desk and not good porn -- weird bizarre porn. The cleaning guy is filthy and walks around in socks that could be used as leg warmers because they are so holy. One of the guys that works the front desk wears womens clothing. I asked for a refund due to conditions and they refused. What a dump. its close to things but I'd stay here only if you want to pick up diseases -- it gives me the chills every time I think about what I would like to call motel hell. there was an incident where a guy that worked there threatened to kill everyone in his room then left only to have slashed everyones tires in the hostel parking lot. I mean wow, who does that? but those are the kind of people they let in this hostel. creepy. this place should be shut down permanently. the owner should be in prison for porn -- and they should frankly demolish this place period. I've been in over two hundred hostels and this one gets ten stars on the "stay away, its creepy scale." That's it folks, enter at your own risk.

4 Fun flop house
I rented week-to-week for two months. This hostel was the funnest two months i've had ever. If you are looking to have a good clean time in Denver don't come here, but if you want to party like it's 1999 and meet a lot of cool people that know how to have fun in this city you should check it out. It is a bit dirty (mice and roaches) but you cant really beat the price. The owner is really weird and does all kinds of crazy things but it is funny to see what he will do next. You can get into some trouble if you don't watch yourself -- i ended up having to go home because a couple of the neighborhood's crack-heads tried to push their way into the dorm and i ended up with both my hands stitched up. check it out!

4 A good stay for the money
I have stayed in hostels throughout the country for economical reasons, most have been comfortable and a good experience for me. If there are valid criticisms, such as comfort and cleanliness, then I think we are justified in our comments. You are not getting a four-star hotel. You are getting the security of a bed and some social interaction. I found the staff at this hostel to be most friendly and helpful, and the hostel was far from the squalid conditions suggested. It might have the most attractive appearance from the outside, but that is not important to my stay. The room I stayed in was clean and quiet, and I would recommend this hostel to the visitors of this great Mile High City.

2 I liked it
Even though the denver international youth hostel isn't the cleanest or the most organised in america, i thought that it was great. ann and nathan were very kind to me when i had nowhere to live. Denver is a unique place and of all my trip from new york to los angeles by bus and back again i kind of wished that i had just stopped and stayed here on the way through the first time. I will always think fondly of this place and someday i hope to go back.

1 Creepy
I was in Denver last summer and was going to stay at this place. (this was before i knew of this site or I might have known better). Anyway, it looked kind of rundown from the outside, so when I walked up I was having second thoughts. The owner, or possibly an employee already saw me though and asked if was going to stay. So, I wouldn't feel obligated to get a room I just said I was looking for a place the next weekend I'm in Denver. I asked how much it was, and if I could see a room. When I asked to see a room the guy got very curt and rude with me and said "we don't do tours!" and so I just said a pleasant good bye and left. From what I saw the place looked like a real rat hole, even dark like one. And what kind of place isn't willing to show you a room (if they have a free one) before you check in! Very suspect, and i see for good reason -- jeez, glad I didn't make the same mistake of staying there that others did. If you're coming to Denver stay somewhere else.

1 I stayed there in September of 2003, and it was not an experience I care to repeat. I have stayed at hostels in California, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona, and this was by far the worst one I experienced. It was so dirty, my friend and I both slept in all of our clothes and checked out the first minute the front desk opened the next morning. The creepiest thing was the toilet in the closet of our room! The hostel reminded me of an orphanage from an old horror film.

1 This hostel is horrible! There are no lockers in it and when I stepped out onto the balcony, the junkie who was sharing the room with me had unzipped my bag and was going through my things! I also had to leave at 9 next morning and lost my $10 deposit because the office was closed. There was no notification anywhere that the office opened so late (9 is a standard business hour) and when I was checking in, the guy at the front desk was incredibly rude and as he was taking my deposit, never bothered to tell me the office hours. So -- I shared a room with a junkie, and consequently, couldn't leave the hostel because of it -- I had to stay and watch my bags and I lost my $10 deposit and was treated poorly by the staff. Do not go here! This place should be shut down. If I ever go back to Denver, I'm going to get my $10 back.

1 The hostel would be ok if the owner would step up and do something about it. In my time there, there was a guy working who tried to gets things in order, but at the same time I also noticed the owner stepping in and giving excuses as to why it is the way it was which made no sense whatsoever. The winter time is very cold. The heat is hardly ever on, and the owner's excuse is it costs too much to use, grab an extra blanket. There are rooms that have major water damage to the ceiling with large pieces missing, and even when it is offered to repair, it is turned down. If you are staying in Denver for only a night or two, then go for it. But if you are planning to stay for a while, I would not choose this Hostel. I want to thank James and Randy for doing everything they could everything they could despite the owners' unwillingness to change for better.
