Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
3   A nice place, but with a few things to note ... After a bit of hassle with the taxi driver having no idea of where this hostel is, in spite fo the fact that the town is tiny ... I arrived at this hostel, very tired from bus travel, and just wanting a place to chill out for the day and night. The family who runs the place are very sweet. I stayed in a dorm room, with 6 beds. The info on Hostelz says it is a 5-bed mixed dorm, but it is a 6-bed mixed dorm. The dorm was clean and although relatively small, we all fit our things without issue. The bathrooms and kitchen were also clean, but could have used a bit more attention, to be honest. Not too bad though ... more a need for nooks and crannies (and shower drains) to be cleaned, as well as just the floor. The main area is outside and is relaxing, with hammocks and tables and chairs. It was quite hot during the day and quite cold at night, so it was nice to hang outside during the day, and soak up the abundant sunshine. There is not much to do IN San Pedro, so a chillout day was great. The main problem with this hostel may not be a problem at all for some people ... There are at least 2 kids under the age of 3, living in the hostel. They were not the happiest campers while I was there, so there was a lot of whining and crying and racing around. They're nice enough kids, it's just clearly a house where little ones live. So, if that is something you want to avoid, then maybe this isn't the place for you. If you like a sense of being in someone's home, this IS the place for you. As to the review from a woman who stated that there were couples snogging all over the place, I am not sure she was in the same hostel, as this is totally family-run. It was relatively quiet, and I got a towel when I asked for one.  ()
2   Dirty and noisy but cheap It's not the cleanest hostel -- dirt tends to be pushed around communal areas rather than swept up. The scouring pads in the kitchen looked about three years old and everything is covered in a thick layer of fly spray and air freshener (wash crockery and cutlery before using as I saw these being sprayed with toxic fly spray!). There was never any toilet paper in the bathrooms, and there were just two bathrooms to be shared by many dorms, there was no laundry service as promised, nor free towels. The hostel appears to be run by a group of lads who are always bringing their girlfriends round (lots of revolting snogging going on), they were always talking and playing music beyond the midnight noise curfew, and generally being really noisy. I don't object to singing in the shower or death metal music, but when you can hear it from your closed room first thing in the morning it's a bit much. That said, the Internet is fast and the hostel is a bit of a walk out of town so you get a break from the tourist chaos (it's not quieter though -- our room was on the street and there were always people outside at all hours). It's also cheap, and felt safe. You could do worse.  , UK ()
