The Hostelz.com Review
Africa Centre Airport Guest Lodge & Travel Centre has been recently refurbished. The prices are higher than other Johannesburg hostels and they are aiming towards a higher level of clientele than most backpacker hostels. It is cheaper to book in advance than at the airport. The hostel is also a popular place for the start and finish of overland tours.

The Location

The Africa Centre Hostel is located in suburban area of Benoni in Johannesburg. The location is safe during the day but taxis must be used at night, as is the case everywhere in Johannesburg. The hostel has recently been refurbished and has more of a commercial feel than most other South African hostels. It caters for a wide variety of travelers, from budget to flashpackers. However the staff are helpful and it is well organised. The hostel is very secure and is in a secure compound with high walls and security gates. All guests have keys to their rooms. The hostel has a good, twenty-four-hour reception area with two PCs for (expensive) internet access and information on tours and activities in the area.

The hostel is located a fifteen-minute shuttle away from OR Tambo International Airport. One free shuttle to the hostel is available on pick-up but the shuttle back to the airport must be paid for. Also, the hostel is a Bazbus backpacker bus stop.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are many different room types available, from single rooms to dorm rooms. The rooms are spacious and the hostel provides clean bed linen and towels. Rooms have either en-suite or shared bathrooms. Hot water is always available. The bathrooms are kept clean. Valuables can be stored in reception as there are no security lockers in the rooms.

Common Spaces

There is a small outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers. There is also a hot tub. The bar area has some couches where travelers can relax and watch DSTV. There is a games area with a pool table in a covered area by the pool. There is a kids' play area also. The hostel has a restaurant with a wide and varied menu available, but it is only open during meal times. A laundry service is also available. There is ample car parking space available.

Summary

This is an excellent hostel, although backpackers who prefer the homey style of a family-run backpackers hostel will be disappointed. Most people are only here to spend a couple of nights before their tour or return flight leaves.

I stayed two times in Africa Center and I have mixed emotions about the place. First of all, I had a feeling that I was not told everything correctly in advance. The budget single turned out to be a cottage in the backyard. Terrible! The more expensive doubles are great but expensive. Still I was not provided with a towel! (I used the sheet instead.) The Internet access was way too expensive and the hostel way too far away from everything. Some of the staff have quite a temper while some are very nice. The garden looks well kept.

Yeah, this is one of the shittiest hostels. It's expensive and miles from the airport. Once you are there you are stuck. Bad bathrooms.

I had a really great time at Africa Centre. I stayed in one of the en suite rooms with satellite TV. I really enjoyed my time. The people were very friendly and the accommodation was very clean. I always think that what you pay for, that's what you get. I also enjoyed a good tour to Kruger and a lot of fun nights in the bar.

This is one of the shittiest places I've ever stayed at. We stayed in a dorm for 22 people. Half of the people living in the dorm were employed at the hostel. This place has bad bathrooms, even worse service, and it's way too expensive, taking into account the location and what you get. Don't let them fool you at the airport!

This is the best hostel in Johannesburg. They will pick you up for free and they will be there for you. Rooms at Africa Centre are perfect. You also get a FREE buffet breakfast in the morning. The staff are very friendly. This is really a five-star hostel. You have to go there and check it out yourself to believe it.

This hostel is lovely! The room in which I stayed was very beautiful and clean, and the hostel is located in a very rich and secure area of Johannesburg, away from the city center and close to the airport. And the safari I booked with them was simply perfect!

The staff member was semi-drunk, the security was nonexistent, and the guy was going to charge a small fortune to assist with transport around Johannesburg. The area in which the hostel was located was very unsafe.

I enjoyed staying at the Africa Centre a lot. They provide a free shuttle from the airport and to shopping centers. The area is very upmarket and secure. More importantly, it is in Johannesburg. The staff were friendly and helpful. I recommend the Africa Centre.

We especially enjoyed hanging out in the bar - Trooper is an excellent bartender. All of the staff made us feel at home. The only complaint I can think of is the lack of bathrooms, but I know they are working on that.
