The Hostelz.com Review
Skogshotell tries to cover all areas of the accommodation market, comprising a hotel, hostel, camping ground, and individual guesthouses.
The Location
Its situation is about as remote as it gets. Situated in the outskirts of a tiny village near the northern town of Gallivare in Swedish Lapland, Skogshotel is in a prime position in the middle of one of Europe's last wildernesses. It is surrounded by trees and a river (full of fish) runs by. The hostel is great for hiking/walking, kayaking, and fishing in the summer and winter pursuits in the area's long winters. As it is some kilometers from the train station in Gallivare or Lapland airport (about eight kilometers from each), a pick-up service is offered for guests. The only problem is that then getting in and out of town is difficult so if you don't come with your own transportation be prepared to spend your entire time in the countryside.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is located in an outbuilding just metres away from the main building and reception. The dorm contains seven single beds (for the most part this is more than enough for this isolated corner of the world). Beds are comfortable and the windows have thick blinds to block out the midnight sun in summer when the twenty-four-hour daylight could prevent you from sleeping. In addition to the hostel aspect of the business the hotel could provide private rooms for those who wanted them or you could bring your camper van or tent and still make use of Skogshotell's facilities. Bathrooms are basic but functional. Showers are communal and large and there is also a sauna.
Common Spaces
The reception building provides the main common areas. There is a restaurant, bar, and room with a fireplace for socialising and relaxing. The atmosphere here is cosy, old fashioned, and friendly. Conversely, it is not a modern party hostel and those seeking nightlife would be better based in town and going out from there to explore the countryside in the day.
Summary
Skogshotell provides hostel accommodation in the remote forested region of northern Sweden and is perfect for those seeking an escape from the modern world. If it's the wilderness you're after, then you'll certainly find it here, right outside your dorm room door!
