The Hostelz.com Review
Boutiques Hostel is not a hostel in a common way, but it is a stylish place with a friendly atmosphere and you could stay here longer than a night. It is an apartment in a normal house, the office is three blocks away, but they will drive you there. The staff aren’t too friendly, but quite helpful when we had questions.
The Location
The hostel is located in a good and quiet area -- Fifty-First Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, only about five minutes' walk from the subway stop at Fiftieth Street, where you can get to most places you'd want to go. The area seemed to us to be a nice and safe neighbourhood. There are pharmacies (also kind of supermarket inside) that are open twenty-four hours on Eighth Avenue and plenty of diners, Asian cuisine, and pizza restaurants five minutes’ walk away, along with some shops and other restaurants. A little hidden coffee/bagel shop is right in the same house. Broadway is also very close and other attractions can be arrived via subway in less than ten minutes. To discover the city, take the Staten Island Ferry (it's free) to see the Statue of Liberty and the skyline.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms look great -- they have a great design, with only four people in a large room with a couch and a large flat-screen TV on the wall. They seem to be overbooked sometimes, so it is possibly becoming a five-person dorm as in our case; the fifth girl was sleeping on the sleeping couch. The kitchen, which is in the room, is new and offers a microwave, fridge (even not very clean), cutlery, plates, a coffee machine. This place first looks very clean and tidy, but if you take a better look it isn’t very clean, so is the bathroom and the dorm.
The bathroom is very small and has to be used by six people, because there is a separated double room in the apartment, they use also all the facilities. The bathtub is dirty, the rest is ok -- but you have to shower there. Luggage is standing somewhere; there is no extra storage space or any lockers. Security seems fine as well, with locking doors. Every guest gets his own keys and is free to come and go.

The common area is a couch standing in the middle of the room, between the beds and there is a table in the kitchen area. The kitchen is big and open, with everything you need, but in the same room as the beds. Wi-Fi is free.

Overall, it is a good hostel -- it's a place to feel safe and it is situated in great area so it is easy to come home at every day and night. The atmosphere is good; also it is not too clean, but it is clean enough to feel quite comfortable. Check-out time is 11 a.m.

Awful Easily the worst hostel I've ever stayed in. Dirty, cramped (which I had expected for NYC), and completely unprofessional; there is no front desk, a man just meets you at the front door to take your upfront payment and leaves, so there's no one to contact when things go wrong. The bed in the 'private' room had a huge infestation of bedbugs, giving the girls that were there bad rashes. When the contact person was called, his solution was to "sleep with the lights on so they didn't come out". Worst hostel ever, do not stay here. — Lauren, Australian (2012-05-08)
