The Hostelz.com Review
The Hostel Sedona has closed permanently effective April 2, 2004.
There are no other hostels in Sedona. Flagstaff is the closest city with a hostel.

Fine This was my first time I ever stayed at a hostel. I stayed here for a night in January 1998 for like $10 I think it was. I was with my friend and we had taken Greyhound to Flagstaff from Los Angeles, then we got a cab from Flagstaff to Sedona. We went there hoping to study the vortexes but not having a car really hampered our efforts. Staying in the bunkhouse and showering with no towel and using found soap (in the shower) was an experience I will never forget. I lost my CD case filled with like fifty CDs too -- I think someone at the hostel stole it but I'm not sure.

Loved it I stayed there somewhere close to '97, too, when Laverne was managing. It was a special place, and I think everybody felt good with Laverne around. He was living in his eco-friendly bus then, too. I ended up riding with him and one of his buddies who were headed off to CA and OR to tour the coastal hostels. We parted ways there but I think back to those times and wonder what Laverne's up to these days.

I stayed there for a couple of months in 1997. Laverne was the manager then, and he lived in a renovated school bus on the property -- what a guy. I had so much fun around there -- hiking, rolling J's, swimming, working odd jobs for xtra cash. Laverne and the owner (I forgot her name) let me build my first pebble mosaic right there on the hostel grounds. I wonder if it's still there. We found a six- or seven-foot long snake that had apparently been run over and a bunch of us skinned it and let the skin dry in the sun. We debated whether to cut the pieces up and let them spread across the globe or to pin it above one of the hostel doors. We left it there, pinned intact above the door. Good times.

I went back to Hostel Sedona after a few years of being away. I about cried when I saw that the place had been turned into a tourist-jeep yard. I will always rembemer the two weeks I was there. The people met, conversations had, and energy shared have left a lasting impression with my mind and spirit. It is truly sad to see it gone.

Wow. I am very sad. I used to frequent Sedona yearly, for nearly two decades. I would spend a portion of my time staying at the hostel, and a portion staying in hotels. The hostel was a great place to meet wandering spirits, it had no whistles and bells, and no frills but communal spaghetti dinners, and taco nights were both inexpensive and great fun. it was nice to meet people from all over. it was nice to have the opportunity to save some money and still enjoy the luxuries of Sedona's nature. I am truly saddened that I will finally be near enough to get my "Sedona Fix" -- a rejuvenation so desperately needed and will be unable to do so simply because my budget at this time does not support the expense of a hotel. Sedona has always been a place that filled needs and was welcoming. it has been a number of years for me, but I truly hope the nature of Sedona has not changed so drastically that those who need to experience it the most are no longer welcome with open arms and open minds. If the hostel has been closed since 2004, one would think there is a potential market there, perhaps there are some b&b's that are not catering to the rise in tourism and who open their doors and arms to wandering spirits in need of rejuvenation -- so long hostel Sedona.

Two out of the three times I stayed in Sedona I stayed at this hostel and am saddened to hear that it has closed. Not everyone can afford to stay several nights in a hotel/motel and this space offered a sanctuary for the traveling spirit in a beautiful place at a reasonable price.

Stayed there a couple of years ago. Cheap and adequate. Wish it was still available as I will be in Sedona beginning of March 06.
