Michel, one of the best backpackers owner in SA..
Hippo Hide, not only a good place to relax, but also a place where you are close to malls and even though it's a bit out of town, it's very easy and cheap to get into town. Apart from that, Michel the hostel owner is really taking her job serious and she will do what ever she can to make you stay and the rest of your trip unforgettable. I have seen her sitting around with guest and helping them along with their trip, giving them advice, good jokes, and some nice stories. If you are going to Durban, stay at Hippo Hide. I did it for fourteen days, and it was very nice!

Durban as a city is not really worth a visit, but Hippo Hide is! In one the best areas of the city you'll find this great place to relax. Although you're very central it is a very quiet place with beautiful vegetation and a nice pool. If you come to Durban, stay here, you'll like it!

Clean and nice hostel with plenty of hippos in the least expected places. Very funny.

I love hippos and I loved this lodge. There are tiny, medium and large hippos, pictures, engravings, and photos of hippos everywhere... It's fun.

This is my favourite hostel on the face of the planet! I spent 3 months in S.A. and went back to the Hippo Hide twice after my original visit when I found myself in Durban. The staff are friendly, it's as clean as any private house, and it feels like you're someone's guest rather than a scraggy backpacker. Bloody marvelous! Oh...and the dogs are great too!
