This hostel is very homey. This hostel is in the middle of the Mallee Desert in North West Victoria, only thirty kilometers from Swan Hill. It is truly an oasis in the middle of nowhere. The hostel is run by a middle aged couple who cannot do enough to make their guests comfortable. We stayed in a room which was an old real estate agent's office, going back to the 1920s. It was explained to us that the rent is payable one week in advance, and that the equivalent bond is to be paid. We were given the option of staying in a caravan, which was cheaper (as it was explained to us that there were no running water or cooking facilities). But we chose to stay in the converted office. There was a homey dining room and lounge area which i can assure you, does not exist in any other hostel in this area. There are two communal kitchens, for the use of guests. One operates with a one dollar coin, the other with a two dollar coin. The owners keep the communal areas exceptionally clean, and they fussed over us the whole time we were there. It was explained to us that there was a $100 job finding fee, and we were very happy to pay it, because we were placed with an exceptional farmer who took the time to train us in fruit picking and fruit packaging. We asked what this fee was for and we were told that a lot of (not so nice) people would check in, get a good job, then check out and sleep in their car on the side of the road. In this part of the Australian desert, we saw the most breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. On a clear night, if you look to the sky, there are that many stars that it is truly humbling. The owner made a truly exceptional espresso for us, which we are still telling our friends about. We would recommend the Depot at Nyah to anyone that wants a homey environment, and likes to mix with other people who have similar interests such as the Australian Outback. I would most definitely stay there again. — fruit_picker83 , Italy (2009-12-05)
Avoid Nyah, and the depot. Unless you have no transportation and are desperate for work nearby, don't stay at the depot. It's a rip-off and offers you far less than a standard caravan park would, at much higher rates. To start, the fees and surcharges are horrendous. The $100 per-person job finders fee was never mentioned to us when we checked in, nor is it on their website. The fees continue as follows, electricity $5.50/week per person (and we didn't even get A/C in our caravan). Cooking is $2 for thirty minutes on a gas burner or BBQ. Washing is $4 for a (light) load, as is the dryer. If you borrow linen, there is also a $10 fee for cleaning the sheets. If you stay in a caravan, you are also required to clean it when you leave, or pay a yet another fee ($30). And finally, the deposit and bond was about $180 when we checked in (so don't lose your receipts!). For all of that, what did we get? Our caravan leaked whenever it rained, drenching our bed. The "faulty" sunroof also leaked regularly. It was extremely creaky inside the van, making it difficult to sleep. The taps weren't connected to the caravan. At one stage we had a garbage bin outside, but it was moved once we started using it. The dormitories aren't much better, and many people complained about sound carrying through all of the rooms in the demountable building. As for Nyah itself, it's pretty bad (check google streetview and see for yourself) and even then the depot is a fair way out from there. There are a couple of caravan parks along the highway in Nyah and they would seem a better option if you already have work lined up (but make sure they don't try and take a cut out of your wages). Better yet, find somewhere closer to Swan Hill! — Dude84 , Australia (2009-11-09)
