The Hostelz.com Review
Cucagna Hostel, this clean and tidy hostel, is located in a small building in the main part of Disentis. It's got a bit of a house feel to it, with en-suite bathrooms and a number of lounges to sit and relax in -- perfect for post skiing or hiking days.
The Location
Disentis is in the Rhine valley of Switzerland and is essentially a skiing resort in winter with thirty kilometers of cross country tracks and in summer is perfect for hiking with one hundred-fifty meters of trails. Tourism is well established with plenty of options in hotels and holiday apartments. This is one of the only budget options in the area.
The hostel itself is located right on the main road through town and thanks to its bright yellow colour you won't miss it. You actually check in at the hotel across the road and they'll give you keys and instructions for accessing your room in the hostel. Parking is behind the hostel in another street, which is a little awkward but safe enough.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are a little poky with a lot of bunk beds jammed into a small space. Our room had three bunks in and no room to swing a cat or put your stuff, although they do have a desk with a TV on it and a large cupboard. The bathroom is similarly tiny, so if the room was full you'd be forever lining up to use it (we were almost the only people in the whole place at the end of September, so that wasn't an issue during our stay). The rooms do lock, which is useful, and you also need a key to access the building so it is very secure, and also very clean and warm.
Common Spaces
There is a communal lounge with a television, plus the rooms all have their own TV as well. It doesn't seem to be that well geared for being a sociable place -- there are no games, internet access, or even books to read. There is a sun terrace, but we couldn't work out how to access it. There was only one other guy on some kind of cycling trip when we were there and they do offer a place to put your bike.
Summary
It seems like it is probably busier here in the winter months, as they offer some packages in winter including ski passes. But this is a good, quiet place to visit on the way through Switzerland.
