The Hostelz.com Review
Ashanti Lodge hostel is located a 5-10 minute walk from Long Street, the centre of Cape Town. It takes about 45 minutes to walk to the Victoria & Albert waterfront, and 20 minutes to the train and bus stations. There is a security gate to enter the premises.

At the entrance, the reception has three computers for internet access, two payphones, and a large travel information desk. The information desk is staffed on weekdays, which can book robben island trips, overland tours, whale-watching trips, car hire, etc. The helpful reception will be happy to book taxis or find information for you.

The TV room, with several armchairs, bean bags, and a reasonable selection of videos (that you can watch at any time) is also downstairs.

Upstairs, the spacious, friendly bar has a pool table and serves breakfast, lunch and tea. The bar is supposed to close at midnight, but rarely does - try to avoid the dorm room next to the bar if you want an early night!

The dorm rooms mostly have six beds (bunks), with under-bed lockers, and a sink in each room. The showers are clean, warm and roomy. Out the back of the hostel is a large pool for the warmer months, surrounded by sun loungers. The hostel tends to be fairly busy even during the winter.

Overall, the Ashanti Lodge is a fun social hostel with good facilities in a good location.

4  Great place -- staff can be a bit slow! Beautiful house and fantastic location. Great pool and well equipped kitchen. Centre of town a short walk. Agree that it can be loud. Bar is banging until around 10:30/11. But hey, this is a backpackers! Although did find night guard ticking people off after midnight for making noise around the pool area so they are aware of keeping the peace. Few issues with room bookings and reception can be slow. Make sure you get receipts for anything you pay for as did have an issue with deposit put down on a room and ended up paying twice. But now you know what to expect, get down their and enjoy it! Don't forget to use the upstairs toilet at the back of the house for the best view of Table Mountain (you'll see what I mean when you get there!).  , UK ()
5  Good way to start your trip Superb facilities (phone card, kitchen, internet, travel information). Not far from the city centre (fifteen minutes walking) and clean room even if not very big. The only problem we had was the noise during the party at the restaurant the fist night (when you have just arrived from fourteen hours traveling is not what you desire most). Apart from that everything was great. I would definitely recommend it.  , Spanish ()
5  Brilliant! Good fun place to meet people I stayed here for four nights recently and had an amazing time. It was our first stop and the fact that the hostel is so secure was a major plus for anyone who may be concerned. They have a travel desk within the hostel who are most helpful with whatever you may need planned. There is a great bar in this hostel with pool tables and a view of table mountain.  ()
4  This hostel is always busy and has a good friendly atmosphere. Great place to meet people. We camped here and the camping area is very small sandpit with room for only six small tents and the hostel will not allow you to reserve a place in advance. The lively bar is just above the camping area so it's too noisy to sleep early, but the music usually stops around 2 a.m. The bathrooms are good and there are four showers. The kitchen is big and well equipped and the pool area and garden are lovely. And you can't beat the nice quiet location of this hostel with its excellent view of Table Mt from the bar, a supermarket, and choice of take-aways and restaurants just round the corner, and it's only a fifteen-minute walk through the beautiful traffic free gardens to the city centre.  , English ()
5  Great Staff! Friendly people! Clean bathrooms! Clean bedrooms! Great pool and front yard with two hammocks for late-afternoon laziness time! Fantastic bar! Well placed in town -- walking distance to Long Street and taxis everywhere aren't expensive! Had loads of fun there and will come back in the future!  ()
5  I stayed here every year for six years running (thats how good I thought it was) and wondered if anyone remembers me!  ()
5  great place. wonderful people. i never wanted to leave.  ()
4  Great place, and some very nice people. Loved the atmosphere and the style. Maybe the music's a bit too loud at night, but it was never a problem. The ten days I and the rest of my class spent here was really fun!  ()
5  Excellent. Clean and good atmosphere. But noisy: why is the music from the bar so loud even when no one's around!  ()
2  Very loud. If you want to party and not see Cape Town then this is the place to go. If you want to experience Africa then forget it. The staff are pretty hopeless as well.  ()
4  This hostel is extremely popular and busy but it is large and beautiful and clean. It's conveniently situated in a nice and safe area, close to a supermarket and Long Street (where are the restaurants and pubs are). It is a perfect place to socialize and get plenty of tips from other people because it is usually the starting or the ending point of backpackers' trips in South Africa. The kitchen was a bit run down but they are putting in a brand new one. I got useful information from the staff, who were friendly except for one person!!! The bar though, was too loud from 9 till 12 every night. So bring along some earplugs.  ()
5  We LOVED Ashanti Lodge. We had an excellent experience from day one and the staff made us really feel welcome. Even with small details at reception our questions were answered quickly. I found the vibe really chilled and relaxed overall and would easily recommend it to other travelers. Let me add that it wasn't my "first stop" in South Africa. I'd traveled extensively before booking into Ashanti. Lisa (the owner) is a fabulous host and her crew are a real asset. We visited about a year ago, but my comments are still relevant I'm sure.  ()
2  Sorry, but I didn't like that place too much, we had to wait sometimes more than half an hour at the reception for a simple question, they had lost our booking and they changed us from dorm every night without reason. Lots of drunkards were hanging there all day long and the dorms were the noisiest we ever experienced! However the staff is very friendly and try their best but they are just too few to handle the situation. This backpacker is more an industry than a chilly place!  ()
4  Brilliant atmosphere, very friendly staff, Cadeau and Yulandi were especially great! Loved the Victorianess of the building + the mosaic decor in upstairs bathrooms are inspiring! Lovely views and central. This place is highly recommended and now I have seen why!  ()
5  Very good place (un lugar limpio y lindo). It has good staff in attendance (mable recepcion las 24hs). Good location (a esacasos 200m de la noche de Cape Town). Las sudafricanas son hermosas! Con sus caritas rubias con narices pequeñas y ojos increibles. Estuve en el 2001 y me gustaria volver alguna vez. Un abrazo.  ()
