The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Ljubljana Youth Hostel / Bit Center Hotel is the type of place you stay for one night. It is very cheap, but a bus ride out of town, and very basic in terms of amenities. It's right next door to a gym if you feel like improving your fitness.

The Location

The hostel is really one level of a building that is dedicated to a fitness centre. It's hard to find because it doesn't look anything like a hostel. Even the rooms are obviously refitted gym rooms with lino and echoing walls -- it's as though you're back in high school classrooms but with dorm beds instead of desks. It is not a cosy place at all and it's even a little scary at times because it's completely deserted most of the time and reminds you of a nineties teen horror film. If you're prepared to face this for the cheapest hostel in town (or out of town) then stay here.

The location is west of the centre and fairly easy to get to. From the train station take bus 5 or 9 in the direction of Stepanjsko Naselje and get off at the Emona stop (one stop from the end of the line). Not many of the bus drivers speak much English so familiarize yourself with the bus map (available at reception) to get around. It's apparently two kilometers out of town, but the bus takes about twenty minutes sometimes so prepare for the travel time.

Common Spaces

There is no kitchen and no common areas (except a few couches in the lobby of the gym which is where most people go to use the expensive internet) but there is a bar where you can sit and order drinks. It is mostly patronized by the gym members so its not really condusive to socializing. They charge per hour for the internet, but if you have your own laptop you get fifteen minutes free before it asks you for you credit card details!

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are large, but have eight to ten beds in each. They have lockers and one shared bathroom with one shower. Hospital blankets and small sheets are provided but are nowhere near warm enough so use your sleeping bag. The rooms also have a lovely smoker's aroma, so don't expect a flowery freshness when you arrive! The showers are basic and very gym-like, but you can't really expect much more for this price.

4 Good quality, considering it is a hostel. It feels more like a budget hotel which can only be better. The main highlight for me was the friendly staff, especially the bar staff in the morning and late evening. They are willing to help with anything you need and are really keen to practice their English with you. Cheap drinks, cheap hostel, and fun activities. The town center is also only 800 tolars (about £2) away. The bus is even less, but make sure you have the right change, otherwise you could end up paying with a large note!

2 It's far from the center although there are excellent bus connections. Breakfast was expensive and poor. The staff felt quite rude.

3 This was good value for the money, but not an amazing hostel. The room was clean but the bathroom really wasn't. The security was pretty bad—we weren't given a key for our room, the door of which didn't even close properly, and there were no lockers we noticed or were told about. Its location is fine—it's easy to get in to the center of the town by bus (the bus stop is just round the corner). Breakfast was expensive.

4 This hotel is a very good value for the money. The rooms are spartan, but clean, with a small bathroom. Security is good, as you have a card to not only gain access to your room, but also to enable you to access the stair wells that lead from the reception area to your room. A basic buffet breakfast is available at the hotel for a reasonable sum. It is self-service, and you are required to take your cutlery, etc. back to the bar when you have finished. There is a nice bar in the hotel, with a neat garden and patio area. The staff are very helpful and speak English well. The only drawback to the hotel is that it is a few kilometres into the town centre, so it is not really walkable into town. Three buses regularly run from the bus stop on the main road (Litijska Cesta) into town. Number 9 takes you to the bus and train station, the 13 takes you to Kongresni Trg and the 5 takes you to the outskirts of the town, where you can easily walk into the centre. A taxi fare from the town to the hotel is reasonable later, when the buses have stopped running.
