La Primula Menaggio Youth Hostel Lake Como is a fantastic hostel with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere; it is suitable for both families and a younger crowd. The hostel is managed and run by former guests and volunteers working for free board and food -- this gives it a unique atmosphere. The staff vary from incredibly helpful and friendly to disorganised and verging on rude, but they’ll still join you for a drink in the bar in the evening. On top of this, the hostel offers fantastic cheap food and gorgeous views over the lake. The hostel also offers a wide variety of activities such as kayaking, sailing, climbing, and Italian cooking classes. This hostel is extremely reasonably priced compared to other accommodation in Lake Como -- it is the only place which allows people on a budget to access the wonders of Lake Como.
The Location
La Primula is situated in Menaggio, on the western shores of the lake, in the perfect position for visiting the other towns on the lake by either boat or bus. The town of Menaggio is a beautiful, bustling town and it's easy to get to with a regular bus service from Como. Take the C10 bus from either Como Lago or Como San Giovanni train stations. Ask to stop at the Grand Hotel Menaggio, cross the road and walk back in the direction the bus came from. The hostel is up a ramp which runs parallel to the road, about two hundred meters from the hotel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. They have twin and triple rooms or family rooms, which sleep four, five, or six people. They also offer a very cheap rate for a dormitory, which has shared bathrooms. To stay at the hostel, you must be a member of Hosteling International (nonmembers are charged an extra fee per night). The rooms are clean and comfortable -- some have amazing lake views. There are free lockers and free linen available. The bathrooms are fairly clean but have an inconsistent hot water supply. There is a washing machine available and drying areas outside.
Common Spaces
The hostel restaurant is the main common area, which is also where the reception, bar, and computers are situated. There are windows all along one wall to make good use of the fantastic view. The hostel provides a free breakfast of fresh bread, jam, tea, coffee, and juice. You can also pay for extras such as pancakes and bacon and eggs. The restaurant also serves a reasonably priced lunch and dinner of pizza, pasta, or salads. Each evening there is also a daily special three-course meal. The food is delicious -- we would recommend eating there most nights. There are picnic benches outside if you prefer eating al fresco. The hostel also has its own private beach just two minutes’ walk away -- it is small but quiet and a great place to spend the day relaxing.
Summary
This hostel does have some downsides with no kitchen, lockout from 2 to 5 p.m. and they charge for Wi-Fi and computer use. However this hostel has an amazing price, an excellent range of activities, and a brilliant location -- which is enough for us to overlook the negatives and thoroughly recommend this hostel.
